Chris Pratt‘s sci-fi movie sees a meteoric rise on Netflix.
I’ve always been a big fan of Chris Pratt, and it’s clear he really shines in sci-fi! He totally turned things around with Guardians of the Galaxy – his Star-Lord is amazing, and he’s still playing him in the Marvel movies. Plus, he carried the Jurassic Park/World series for years! He just came out with a new sci-fi film, Mercy, and now one of his earlier movies is blowing up on Netflix – everyone’s watching it, and it’s so cool to see it get so much attention!
As of today, Passengers is the fourth most popular movie on Netflix in the United States. The sci-fi film starring Chris Pratt became available on the streaming service nationwide on June 1st, and quickly rose in the rankings, surpassing several other well-known titles. Currently, Passengers is performing better than movies like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, both Creed and Creed II, and The Girl on the Train. Only Creed III, GOAT, and the new movie The Crash are currently more watched in the US.
The sci-fi film Passengers, originally released in theaters on December 21, 2016, is now gaining popularity as a Netflix hit in the United States. The movie stars Chris Pratt as Jim Preston, a man accidentally awakened from cryosleep almost a century too early during a 120-year voyage to a new planet. Feeling isolated, Jim decides to wake up another passenger, Aurora Lane, played by Jennifer Lawrence, and their relationship becomes the central focus of the story. Passengers was directed by Morten Tyldum, known for Silo, and written by Jon Spaihts, who also co-wrote the screenplays for the first two Dune films directed by Denis Villeneuve.
The movie Passengers earned $303.1 million worldwide. With a production budget of $110 million, it needed to make between $220 and $275 million to cover its costs, and it successfully did so. While Passengers was financially successful, critics didn’t love it – it currently has a 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning it a ‘Rotten’ label. Viewers, however, seem to enjoy the film more, giving it a 63% audience score based on over 50,000 ratings. This positive audience response likely explains why it’s currently popular on Netflix in the U.S.
Netflix is having a strong year for science fiction films, and the success continues with Passengers. Following the announcement of a sequel to 2026’s War Machine – which quickly became a top 10 hit on the platform – Netflix is also preparing new sci-fi releases like Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn. Since Passengers has only been available for a short time, its position on the US streaming charts could improve even further over the weekend, potentially making it an even bigger hit.
