Okay, so this is pretty wild. One of my favorite Wii games, and a lot of other people’s too, just got a surprise update! I honestly didn’t expect to see any new content after all these years – it’s been almost 16 years since it first came out. Nintendo’s been bringing over a bunch of classic games to the Switch since 2017, like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, which is awesome. But now, one of those ported games actually has new story content added! It’s a really cool surprise for fans.
The Wii game receiving an update is Super Mario Galaxy 2. First released for Wii in 2010, Super Mario Galaxy 2 was a sequel that built upon the gameplay and ideas introduced in the 2007 game, Super Mario Galaxy. Last year, Nintendo re-released both Super Mario Galaxy games on Switch and Switch 2 in a bundle called Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2. This is the version of the game that Nintendo has now updated.
Nintendo has added a new chapter to the storybook in Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Switch/Switch 2 as part of update 1.4.0. You can unlock this chapter by completing any galaxy and earning a Power Star. It reveals more about Rosalina’s history. While it’s a small addition to the game, it’s unexpected to see new content added to such an older title.

It’s a little unexpected that the new “Final Chapter” added to Super Mario Galaxy 2 doesn’t connect to the recent Super Mario Movie. The movie actually introduced new details about Rosalina and her place in the Mario universe, and those details were officially made part of the game’s story. Many fans thought this new storybook chapter would reflect what was shown in the movie, but it doesn’t seem to.
Beyond the main changes, the newest update for Super Mario Galaxy 2 reportedly enhances the game for a more polished experience on both the Switch and the upcoming Switch 2. If you haven’t tried this updated version yet, now is a great time to jump in.
