Crimson Desert Voice Actor Says He Would “Happily” Come Back to Voice Kliff Again

Alec Newman is a well-known voice actor who has worked on many popular games, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Alan Wake 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Metaphor: ReFantazio. But in a recent interview with Fall Damage, he explained that playing the character Kliff in Crimson Desert was a unique experience, different from anything else he’s done in his career.

He described Crimson Desert as a stunning game, unlike anything he’d worked on before. He noted a shift in perception of voice acting within the industry; early in his career, it wasn’t always considered legitimate acting by his colleagues, but now they’re eager to learn how to get involved.

When talking about Kliff, it’s interesting how much of a character he is, even though he doesn’t say a lot during the game.

Kliff is a fascinating character. He’s not very talkative, but he clearly has a strong connection to the other Greymanes – a real sense of brotherhood and family. It was a challenge to show that in a game, where it’s harder to convey emotion than in a play or film. However, as players have spent more time with the game – 60, 80, or even 100 hours – they’ve started to see Kliff as a true companion.

We followed the project through all its stages over several years, which was a new experience for me. I’ve never worked with a single character for such an extended period before.

He’s open to reprising the role in future installments, saying he’d gladly voice the character for as long as needed. He found it amusing that a character known for being quiet ended up requiring so much recording time, especially since the game was still under development as they worked on it.

Newman pointed out a surprisingly emotional detail about the character Kliff: the way he looked and moved made Newman feel like he’d be Scottish in real life. He even added that Kliff reminded him so much of his wife’s late stepfather that he essentially based Kliff’s voice on the man’s voice.

Pearl Abyss, the developer of Crimson Desert, has publicly shared the game’s success. In April, they announced that 5 million copies had been sold. As a result, CEO Heo Jin-young expressed his gratitude to the development team and awarded them a bonus of 5 million Won.

He shared his sincere appreciation for the dedication of everyone involved in creating their popular product. To celebrate reaching 5 million sales, he’s giving a bonus to all employees who consistently contributed behind the scenes.

Today felt like just the beginning! Seeing all that potential really fired me up, and I’m confident it’ll help us tackle whatever comes next. It’s exciting to think about what we can achieve now!

Crimson Desert is now available to play on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. You can find the newest information about the game in its latest update.
