Daisy Ridley Breaks Silence On Cancelled Star Wars Spinoff Movie

There are already many Star Wars projects that never made it to the screen, and one more was recently revealed. Actor Adam Driver mentioned he worked with director Steven Soderbergh on a spin-off film called The Hunt for Ben Solo. While details about the story are scarce, a complete script was written and approved by Lucasfilm. Surprisingly, Disney cancelled the project because executives were confused about how Ben Solo could still be alive after his death in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Since Driver first spoke about it, there’s been a lot of support for the film, and now, his co-star Daisy Ridley has shared her opinion.

In an interview with IGN, Daisy Ridley talked about the story behind Adam Driver’s character arc, ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo.’ She admitted she had heard bits and pieces from friends working on the production, but was still shocked when the full story was revealed. She was particularly surprised that Driver himself was the one who shared it, calling it ‘the big surprise of the year.’

She went on to discuss the fan campaigns that successfully convinced Disney to make the movie. She expressed her love for seeing such positive energy and how the internet united to make it happen, calling it fantastic and a good thing for everyone. While acknowledging the character’s popularity, she was especially touched by how much people genuinely wanted the film to be made. She simply enjoys seeing people from all over the world come together for a positive cause – and even chuckled at the pun of people ‘joining forces’.

The Hunt for Ben Solo Had an Advantage Over Star Wars’ Rey Spinoff Movie

Details about The Hunt for Ben Solo are scarce, but Rey likely would have been a central figure. Her complex relationship with Kylo Ren was a key part of the sequel trilogy, especially the discovery of their unique Force connection. Considering how important their bond was, it’s probable Rey would have been the one searching for Ben Solo, hoping he survived. This spinoff could have allowed Lucasfilm to continue Rey’s story beyond the main films – something the studio wants to do, but has found challenging.

At Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, a new Star Wars film, currently called New Jedi Order, was announced, with Daisy Ridley set to return as Rey. Since then, the movie’s story has gone through several revisions with different writers working on it. The basic idea – Rey starting a new Jedi school years after The Rise of Skywalker – sounds promising. However, the film hasn’t been given a release date and there’s uncertainty about whether it will ever be made.

The problems with the New Jedi Order script aren’t unusual for Star Wars projects; creative disagreements have derailed other stories too. Considering Lucasfilm’s history, it’s surprising Disney turned down the Hunt for Ben Solo pitch. It had a completed script by a well-regarded writer (Scott Z. Burns) and was going to be directed by Steven Soderbergh, an acclaimed filmmaker. Soderbergh likely had a compelling reason for why Ben Solo was still alive, which makes Disney’s rejection even more puzzling. You’d expect Lucasfilm’s support for the script would have been enough to get it made.

It appears Adam Driver won’t be returning to Star Wars, which probably means the planned series The Hunt for Ben Solo will remain cancelled, despite fan efforts to revive it. However, if Lucasfilm continues to have trouble developing a new storyline with New Jedi Order, Disney might want to reconsider. The Hunt for Ben Solo actually got quite far in development – Lucasfilm even created a budget and shooting schedule – before it was ultimately rejected. Since Rey is expected to play a key role in future Star Wars films, bringing back The Hunt for Ben Solo could be the best way to continue her story, making a strong case for its production.
