DC Just Confirmed That Supergirl Will Do One Thing That Superman Would Never Do

The upcoming Supergirl movie is shaping up to be quite different from Superman. Trailers have already hinted at this, particularly highlighting Supergirl’s ability to see people as they truly are, a contrast to Superman’s more hopeful outlook. Beyond that, the movie itself seems to be taking a different path. Supergirl is portrayed as a more forceful fighter, and she’s dealing with a deep sadness stemming from witnessing the loss of her family – something Superman never went through. She’s also struggling to find her place in the world, and isn’t afraid to use strong language, making her a very different hero than her cousin.

According to Slash Film, DC Studios executive Chantal Nong Vo, who’s also a producer on the new Supergirl movie, confirmed that Supergirl will be allowed to swear. This is a deliberate choice to set her apart from her cousin, who generally avoids using profanity.

How Supergirl Allows More Mature Content While Remaining PG-13

Director Craig Gillespie, known for Dumb Money, managed to slip one carefully chosen expletive into the Supergirl movie. According to producer Nong Vo, they were playfully debating where to place it, asking, “Is this the swear word?” Vo mentioned Gillespie has a particular favorite, and they’re enjoying the process of finding the right moment for it, despite the film being rated PG-13.

You’d never expect to hear anything negative from Superman, the ultimate good guy. He’s a role model in every way, including how he talks and the words he chooses. Growing up, Clark Kent was taught to respect everyone by his parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, and he carries that respect into all his interactions. Supergirl is a powerful hero, but her upbringing was very different from Superman’s. Supergirl Will Still Be an All-Ages Movie

Parents don’t need to be concerned that this movie will be as explicit as Peacemaker. While Supergirl does use one strong swear word, that doesn’t mean the film will be overly crude or aimed at adults only. According to Nong Vo, they are aiming for a balance – pushing boundaries a bit, but without being excessive. The goal is to create something that’s enjoyable for a wide audience, even if it’s a little bit more daring than typical superhero content.

We’re seeing more curse words in PG-13 movies these days. James Gunn used them sparingly in his Guardians of the Galaxy films, and many other Marvel movies did the same – just one instance to keep the rating down. The ratings board seems to be more lenient now. The recent Masters of the Universe movie had quite a bit of cursing and still received a PG-13 rating. While most MCU films have followed this pattern, only a few, typically featuring characters like Deadpool who frequently swear, have earned R ratings.

The show Supergirl centers around a young woman who experienced immense loss. Unlike her cousin Superman, who was sent away as a baby to safety, she grew up witnessing tragedy and losing her family. Given this difficult past, her outbursts – whether through anger or harsh words – feel natural. It seems the filmmakers have found a fitting moment for her to express herself strongly, and if the tone matches James Gunn’s Guardians films, it could be a truly memorable scene.
