Destiny 2 Support Ending After 9 Years, Sony Dev Bungie to Focus on a ‘New Beginning’

After almost a decade of support, Destiny 2 is done.

Originally launched in 2017, the game has had its ups and downs, with many expansions added over time, and it’s now available to play for free.

It became a PS5 first-party game when Sony bought Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022.

It’s official: the studio has stopped actively working on the game, as of June 9th. This marks the end of development for the popular title.

Just to confirm, the game will stay online and you’ll still be able to play it for the time being. However, we won’t be adding any new content or providing ongoing support.

Bungie announced that its last update for Destiny 2 will aim to make the game inviting for returning players. You can find details about their plans in this article.

The studio in Washington announced it’s starting fresh and developing its future games. It’s currently unknown if they’ll create a Destiny 3, or focus on completely new projects.

Destiny 2’s main story seemed to conclude with 2024’s The Final Shape, but the game continued to receive updates, including the Star Wars-inspired Renegades content released last year.

However, the number of players has dropped significantly, and Bungie has shifted its attention to Marathon, which hasn’t gained a large following either, even though critics generally like it.

Sony acquired Bungie hoping to expand into games that continuously update and engage players, but the investment hasn’t paid off as expected. Sony recently had to reduce the value of its Bungie investment by over $750 million, as Bungie struggled to maintain its popularity and create successful ongoing games.

It’s unclear if the company has the resources to develop a new game, but if it does, that game will absolutely need to be successful. We wish everyone working on it the best of luck.
