2026 will be a huge year for video game anniversaries, with popular franchises like Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda reaching significant milestones. Both fans and game companies enjoy celebrating these anniversaries, and 2026 is already shaping up to be special. Now, SEGA has announced plans to celebrate the anniversaries of several of its classic games. As a long-standing and influential company in the gaming world, SEGA has a wealth of beloved franchises to commemorate.
SEGA announced a new venture called SEGA Universe on April 24th, with a website dedicated to the project. The initiative, built around the tagline “No old, stay gold,” aims to revitalize classic SEGA games by branching out into areas like movies, music, and fashion. A new video was also released, designed to evoke nostalgia and hinting at some of the game franchises that will be part of SEGA Universe.
SEGA to Celebrate Its Classic Games with New Cross-Media Initiative
The new video and website haven’t officially revealed SEGA’s plans for this project. However, the website features a “2026 selected” section showcasing games and characters with major anniversaries this year. It seems likely these are the titles being considered for new releases as part of this initiative, and the list covers a wide range of games from classic 1986 arcade titles to more recent SEGA Dreamcast games.
The full list of retro SEGA games included on the new SEGA Universe website is:
- Fantasy Zone (1986 arcade shooter)
- Outrun (1986 arcade racing game)
- Streets of Rage (1991 SEGA Genesis action game)
- Rent a Hero (1991 SEGA Genesis action RPG)
- Guardian Heroes (1996 SEGA Saturn action RPG)
- NiGHTS into Dreams (1996 SEGA Saturn flight action game)
- Dynamite Deka (1996 arcade action game)
- Sakura Wars (1996 SEGA Saturn adventure game)
- SGGG (2001 SEGA Dreamcast simulation RPG)

Every game listed on the website already has a multimedia introduction, including a dedicated playlist. It’s currently unknown if SEGA intends to create new content for all nine of these games this year, or even at all. However, featuring them on the website suggests SEGA wants to keep these classic titles in players’ minds. This new initiative, combined with that reminder, likely means we can expect some kind of celebration for most of these games soon. At the very least, it seems likely that something new is coming for Sakura Wars, as it’s heavily featured in the promotional video, and there have already been strong suggestions of new content for that franchise.
If these titles gain traction, we’ll probably see related projects beyond the original content – things like music, clothing, or other merchandise. But the project’s goals also suggest that new games or a collection of older, classic titles aren’t off the table. SEGA has released these kinds of collections before, so it’s possible we’ll get another one featuring these older games, alongside other fan merchandise and projects.
