Adam Sandler became a popular movie star early in his career with successful comedies like Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, and The Wedding Singer. He continued making comedies for theaters throughout the 2000s, but around 2015, he started making most of his movies for Netflix. While he’s still done some theatrical releases – with Uncut Gems being a standout – most of his films now premiere on the streaming service, where they consistently attract huge audiences. As a result, his partnership with Netflix has been very successful for over ten years, and now they have another hit movie to celebrate.
I was so excited to see that Roommates was the third most popular movie on Netflix worldwide from April 13th to 19th! It got a huge 8.8 million views and people watched it for a total of 15.7 million hours. This was the first week it made it into the top 10, just behind 180 and the popular movie Thrash.
Roommates Continues Netflix’s Sandler Family Trend

What’s interesting about the Netflix film Roommates is that it doesn’t center around Adam Sandler, which is different from many of his other projects. He produced the movie and appears in a supporting role, but his daughter, Sadie Sandler, is the lead. Sadie started acting in her father’s films as a child, and in Roommates, she plays Devon Weisz, a quiet college student who doesn’t quite get along with her outgoing roommate, Celeste. Released on April 17th, the film quickly gained a large audience, showing that viewers were eager to watch it right away.
With Roommates, Netflix continues a recent pattern with Adam Sandler comedies: featuring one of his children in the lead role. This follows 2023’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, which starred Sandler’s daughter Sunny as a middle schooler dealing with a friendship issue during her bat mitzvah preparations. Both films have been praised by critics. Roommates currently has a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is even more popular with a ‘Certified Fresh’ score of 91%. This is a welcome change, as Adam Sandler’s own comedies haven’t typically received such positive reviews.
As a fan, I think Netflix has to be thrilled with how things are going! It’s clear the success isn’t just about Adam Sandler – his daughters are real stars and can carry a movie on their own. That’s huge for Netflix because they can keep making films with them. Adam’s still acting – I recently enjoyed his role in Jay Kelly and loved Happy Gilmore 2 – but it feels like he’s already starting to hand things over to a new generation. Even if he wanted to focus more on producing, Netflix seems safe knowing they’ve got another generation of Sandlers ready to go!
While the big boom in streaming might be slowing down, Adam Sandler’s comedies continue to draw large audiences on Netflix, proving there’s still a demand for this type of content. Partnering with Netflix was a smart decision for Sandler, especially considering how much the movie industry has changed since he first became popular. It’s now difficult to get moderately-priced comedies made for theaters, but Netflix allows Sandler to keep the genre going, offering viewers easy, feel-good entertainment when they want to relax.
