The Xbox Games Showcase highlighted Gears of War: E-Day with a dedicated presentation. The Coalition developers shared details about the game, starting with the origin of its story: the iconic scene from the original Gears of War’s “Mad World” trailer featuring Marcus shooting at a Corpser.
The story begins with Marcus and Dom struggling to return to normal life and still grieving the loss of Dom’s brother, Carlos, whom Marcus was also close to. However, their peace doesn’t last long – the Locust army attacks Kalona, turning familiar places into ruins and plunging Sera back into war.
Kalona feels like a unique place with a rich history and character, while still fitting the established Gears aesthetic of decaying beauty, impressive structures, and practical technology. Though it’s different from locations we’ve seen before, it still captures the feeling of navigating both cramped streets and wide-open areas, now with more opportunities for vertical combat.
To improve gameplay, the developers completely reworked how players move. They added new low cover, the ability to slide while sprinting, and jumping – though jumping doesn’t always seem to be available. Like in Gears 5, you can now complete optional side objectives, such as rescuing survivors or assisting another squad with an ambush. However, these objectives are entirely optional and can be skipped if you prefer.
For fans of the series, Gears of War: E-Day delivers everything you’d hope for – detailed environments, intense fighting, and even the return of the iconic E-Holes (those dangerous sinkholes!). It’s launching October 6th as a console exclusive for Xbox Series X/S and on PC.
