2026 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for fans of Gintama! The popular franchise, based on Hideaki Sorachi’s manga in Weekly Shonen Jump, keeps surprising everyone with new releases. Even years after its initial debut, Gintama – a beloved anime and manga series – continues to draw anticipation for new projects. This January, the anime became available on streaming platforms, marking twenty years since it first came out. Plus, a special remake of a fan-favorite story arc, “Yoshiwara in Flames,” hit Japanese theaters in February and was a huge success. Gintama is well-known for its unique mix of exciting storylines, hilarious comedy, and endearing characters. As a parody, it cleverly pays tribute to classic anime and manga, making it especially enjoyable for longtime fans.
Before creating the popular series Gintama, Hideaki Sorachi created a short manga called Dandelion with a completely different story and setting. Dandelion was first published in 2002 and later included in the first volume of Gintama after its release in 2003. Twenty-four years later, Netflix decided to adapt Dandelion into a seven-episode anime. Because the original manga is short, the animation studio, Studio NAZ, added extra scenes to fill out the seven episodes. The anime started streaming on April 16, 2026, and features the opening theme song “Goron to Doron” by Kocchi no Kento, which was shared on official X (formerly Twitter) and the Netflix Anime YouTube channel.
What Is Dandelion About?
This story takes place in a world where angels work for a special department of the Japanese Angel Federation, helping spirits find peace and move on to the afterlife. Two of these angels, Tetsuo Tanba and Misaki Kurogane, are responsible for finding lost souls that are stuck on Earth. They guide these spirits towards acceptance and help them let go of their past lives, but the job often proves more difficult than expected.
Tanba and Kurogane have a different approach in the Send-Off Department; they take the time to truly help each spirit deal with their regrets, rather than quickly processing them. The announcement of a new anime series for Gintama came as a big surprise to fans. It followed a mysterious post on Twitter in February, featuring an image of Sorachi’s avatar, which successfully generated excitement and anticipation for the reveal.
The announcement was officially made the next day, along with a message from the manga creator, Sorachi, about the unexpected anime adaptation. He playfully mentioned that this was his first work in over twenty years to get an anime, and while he teased Netflix good-naturedly, he expressed excitement about revisiting his characters after so long.
