Godzilla Minus One Heads for New York in First Trailer & Plot Details

As a huge Godzilla fan, I’m so excited! It’s only been three years since the last movie, but the King of the Monsters is already back! They just showed the first trailer for Godzilla Minus One at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and it looks amazing!

The new monster movie was officially announced in November 2024. Takashi Yamazaki is back as the writer, director, and visual effects supervisor. A large preview was shown at CinemaCon, and Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe will reprise their roles.

What Happens in Godzilla Minus Zero?

The 2023 film was the 37th installment in the long-running Godzilla series and the 33rd film made by Toho. Set in post-World War II Japan, the story centers on Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot. He arrives at a Japanese base only to find it under attack by Godzilla, a giant, dinosaur-like monster, leaving him as one of the few people left alive.

I was so moved by Shikishima’s story. He came home after the war, only to discover his family hadn’t survived. Despite his own trauma, he took in a woman and a little orphaned baby, offering them everything he could. But even with the war over, peace felt impossible. It broke my heart to learn that Godzilla returned, bringing danger right back to Japan, and Shikishima had to face it all over again.

The new movie, Godzilla Minus Zero, takes place in 1949, two years after the first film, Godzilla Minus One. It follows the Shikishima family as they deal with a brand new crisis.

Ryunosuke Kamiki reprises his role as Koichi Shikishima, and Minami Hamabe returns as Noriko Oishi, having survived Godzilla’s initial attack on Tokyo. This time, Godzilla sets its sights on New York City, with scenes showing the monster heading towards the Statue of Liberty.

Kamiki described his return to the project as incredibly important to him, calling it one of the most meaningful works of his career. He felt the same level of responsibility as he did with the 2023 film and gave it his all to ensure both general audiences and Godzilla fans would love it.

Godzilla Minus One Was a Major Success

Released in 2023, Godzilla Minus One became the highest-grossing Godzilla film ever, earning $116 million globally on a budget of just $15 million. Remarkably, it also won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects – a first for any film in the Godzilla series and the first time a non-English language film has claimed the prize. Critics and audiences alike loved it, with a 99% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics and a 98% ‘Verified Hot’ score from viewers.

The new movie had a larger budget than the first, and it was specially filmed for IMAX – a first for any Japanese film. The exact amount spent on the production hasn’t been revealed yet.

As a huge Godzilla fan, I’m so excited! The new movie is coming out in Japan on November 3rd and here in the US on November 6th. What’s really cool is that this is the first time a Godzilla film made in Japan has been released almost at the same time in both countries!
