Alien landscapes are common in science fiction, but it’s interesting that even highly-rated sci-fi TV shows often don’t make the most of them. Series like Star Trek and Doctor Who usually treat alien planets as just backdrops for the story, maybe showing off something unusual or pretty, but rarely focusing on the environment itself. When creative projects do fully develop alien settings, the results can be stunning, like in the Avatar films and the fictional documentary Alien Worlds.
Alex Garland’s sci-fi horror film, Annihilation, is known for beautifully capturing its strange and unsettling environment. However, a lesser-known HBO series does a similar job of bringing an alien world to life. Scavengers Reign, a 12-episode animated sci-fi show, centers on the crew of the cargo ship Demeter 227, who find themselves stranded on the planet Vesta. Unlike stories that simply use alien landscapes as scenery, Scavengers Reign makes the planet itself feel like a living, breathing character, filled with both wonder and peril.
As a huge sci-fi fan, I’ve been completely blown away by this show. It’s got that same incredible attention to detail as The Expanse, really grounding its fantastical setting in believable science. A lot of people who love Scavengers Reign are also drawing comparisons to Primal, which speaks to its raw, powerful storytelling. Honestly, while it might not get the recognition it deserves, this show is right up there with the best sci-fi ever made – it’s that good!
Scavengers Reign Is One Of The Best Sci-Fi Animated Shows Ever Made
Critics and audiences alike overwhelmingly love Scavengers Reign, giving it a 100% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 96% audience approval rating. This praise is earned – the show excels in its storytelling, creating a richly detailed world, and innovative sound. The series skillfully connects three separate stories, examining both human nature and the unique environment of the planet Vesta. While it includes familiar sci-fi elements like robots, Scavengers Reign takes a fresh approach, focusing on how the characters connect with and understand the planet’s ecosystem, similar to the film Annihilation.
Many people think of animation as something just for kids, but the new show Scavengers Reign is definitely not for children. Although visually stunning, it’s a dark and often frightening series with disturbing imagery that could upset even adults. It explores serious themes like human selfishness, which is a valuable lesson, but younger viewers might be better off learning about similar ideas from a gentler film like Ferngully: The Last Rainforest.
It’s a shame more people didn’t watch Scavengers Reign – this HBO series is a sci-fi gem. The show creates a truly original and believable alien world, and, much like Primal, it powerfully explores the raw instinct to survive. Sadly, despite hints of a possible second season, Scavengers Reign was canceled after just one season.
Why Scavengers Reign Only Lasted One Season
I was really bummed when Scavengers Reign got canceled by HBO in 2024, especially since it had just come out in 2023 and they didn’t even say why! It felt like bad timing, because streaming services were changing a lot, and HBO seemed to be moving away from sci-fi. Everyone who reviewed it loved the show, but apparently not enough people were watching for them to keep putting money into it. There was a little hope when Netflix picked it up – they’ve saved shows like Lucifer and Cobra Kai before – but even though Scavengers Reign is totally unique, Netflix hasn’t announced a second season yet.
The conclusion of Scavengers Reign sees the remaining Demeter 227 crew members experience various outcomes on Vesta – some make selfless sacrifices, others find a way to live on the planet, and a few encounter new people just as the story ends. Though the finale feels complete, the creators have hinted at much more to explore. They’ve shared that season one tells a full story, but they have ‘big ideas’ for the future, and we’ve only scratched the surface of what Vesta has to offer. This suggests a second season of Scavengers Reign would be a welcome addition.
