How The Watch Dogs Movie Adapts The Hit Sci-Fi Video Game Franchise’s “Massive World” Addressed By Star

While the upcoming Watch Dogs movie starring Tom Blyth isn’t a straight adaptation of the video games, Blyth assures fans it will successfully recreate the expansive, open-world experience they love.

For over ten years, Hollywood has been trying to create a movie based on the popular Ubisoft action-adventure series. Initially, the project involved the writers of Deadpool and Sony Pictures, but it faced many delays. In early 2024, the Watch Dogs movie began to move forward with Mathieu Turi directing and a script written by Christie LeBlanc (Oxygen) and Victoria Bata (Tell Me Lies). Sophie Wilde, known for her role in Talk to Me, was cast as one of the leads.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns, actor Noam Blyth discussed his upcoming thriller, Wasteman, and provided a small update on the Watch Dogs movie. While he couldn’t reveal much detail, Blyth expressed enthusiasm for the finished film, saying he’d only seen short clips during audio dubbing but thought they looked promising.

Blyth noted the film successfully adapted the expansive world of the Watch Dogs games for the screen, complimenting the filmmakers for the difficult task of bringing a video game to life. He also explained that what initially drew him to the script was the way LeBlanc and Bata connected the story to current events.

Tom Blyth felt the script cleverly updated the source material to reflect modern life, even though he’s not a big gamer himself. He believes the film critically examines our current world – particularly the risks and interconnectedness of online life, much like the games it’s based on. He apologized for being a bit unclear, saying he couldn’t elaborate further.

Recently, Blyth shared more details about the Watch Dogs movie, and it aligns with what he previously told ScreenRant. He’d praised the creative team for doing a fantastic job adapting the games, but also clarified that the movie isn’t a direct adaptation of any specific game. Instead, it’s an original story set within the Watch Dogs universe, meaning we won’t see characters like Aiden Pearce directly recreated on screen.

Although each Watch Dogs game has a unique story and characters, they all share a core element: the player can control ctOS, a powerful network that connects everything in the city – from phones and traffic lights to security cameras. The main characters are all hackers who use this system, but their ultimate goal is to prevent corporations from misusing it to gather people’s private data.

While Blyth hasn’t revealed any major plot details, his hint about a focus on timing in the Watch Dogs movie suggests what the story might be about. The film could explore the risks of our interconnected, online world, with Blyth’s character becoming involved in a conspiracy related to the ctOS system and someone misusing it. This could lead to a story about exposing the dangers of the system, similar to how Terminator warned about the potential risks of artificial intelligence.

It’s surprising to learn, from recent comments, that the Watch Dogs movie still isn’t finished. Filming wrapped last September, and while it has a lot of visual effects, most movies like this would be completed by now. The lack of a distributor could mean we won’t hear any more news about the film for a while.
