I Can’t Believe Prime Video Just Cancelled This 2-Season TV Show With 94% on Rotten Tomatoes

It’s always disappointing when a show you like is cancelled, especially if it feels premature. This happens a lot with streaming services, and Amazon Prime Video is no exception. While some cancellations make sense, others seem unfair. Whether it’s The Wheel of Time, My Lady Jane, or one of the many other shows Prime Video has ended, chances are you probably wished it had lasted longer.

Recently, the cancellation of Gen V came as a surprise. This Prime Video series, a spin-off of The Boys set at a college for superheroes, seemed to be gaining momentum and even surpassing the original show in popularity. While The Boys universe hasn’t been a massive hit overall – the animated series Diabolical only lasted one season – Gen V showed real promise. Despite the main Boys series nearing its end, the franchise still has potential with the upcoming prequel Vought Rising, starring Jensen Ackles, and a new series planned to be set in Mexico.

Like many streaming services, Prime Video doesn’t share detailed viewing numbers or reasons for canceling shows. However, it seems likely that low ratings combined with production costs led to the cancellation, which is disappointing because Gen V had a lot of potential and deserved to continue.

Gen V Deserved Better Than Being Cancelled After Season 2

While not flawless, Gen V was a thoroughly enjoyable series. It successfully captured the energy of The Boys while still feeling new and inventive. The show matched its predecessor in terms of shocking violence and gore, but upped the ante with even more imaginative superpowers and creative kills. What really stood out, though, was its heart and strong character development. The young heroes and villains were the show’s biggest strength, and it expertly blended the challenges of being a teenager with the extraordinary circumstances they faced – similar to what Buffy the Vampire Slayer did so well.

The show had a lot of promising characters and actors, and could have explored them further. It definitely deserved another season to finish the main storylines. The ending of Gen V Season 2 connects to Season 5 of The Boys, hinting at the return of these characters, but keeping the two shows relatively separate – which is good, as they haven’t crossed over yet. Ideally, we would have seen these characters get the chance to complete their journey at Godolkin University.

Despite its potential, Gen V was cancelled, which is disappointing. The show’s core idea – a college for superheroes – could have easily continued with new characters, even after the main storyline of The Boys concludes. While the future of the Boys universe is uncertain after Homelander’s likely defeat, the show thrived on its own, focusing on the students and their experiences, and wasn’t reliant on crossovers. It felt like Gen V was really hitting its stride in season three, so it’s a shame we won’t see these characters’ stories continue.

The first two seasons of Gen V are available to stream on Prime Video.
