In Just 1 Day, Paramount+’s Surprise Video Game Adaptation Turns Into an Instant Streaming Hit

Paramount+ unexpectedly released the Among Us TV show, and it quickly became popular with viewers. The series, based on the popular video game, was an instant hit.

The animated series Among Us, first revealed in 2023, surprised everyone when all 10 episodes were released at once on Paramount+. According to data from FlixPatrol, the show quickly became a hit, reaching the Top 10 most-watched shows on Paramount+ worldwide within a single day. This followed its initial success in the United States and other regions.

Among Us Is Just Like the Video Game

The animated series was created by Owen Dennis, drawing heavily from the popular video game it’s based on. It centers around the crew of a spaceship, The Skeld, who realize a shapeshifting alien is hiding among them and secretly eliminating the crew one by one. The series follows their attempts to identify the impostor before it’s too late, mirroring the gameplay of the original video game where players must do the same to win.

Someone on your spaceship has been replaced by an alien that can change its appearance, and it’s trying to create chaos, damage the ship, and eliminate the crew. You need to identify and stop the alien – the ‘Impostor’ – before it kills everyone.

Many Big Names Are Part of the Voice Cast

The voice cast features Randall Park (known from WandaVision) as Red, Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us) as Purple, Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) as Orange, Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) as Green, Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast) as Blue, Liv Hewson (Santa Clarita Diet) as Black, Kimiko Glenn (Orange Is the New Black) as Cyan, Debra Wilson (Mad TV) as Yellow, Phil LaMarr (Futurama) as Brown, and Wayne Knight (Seinfeld) as Lime. Patton Oswalt (The King of Queens) makes a guest appearance as White.

Okay, so the animation for the new Among Us series is coming from Titmouse, the same studio behind Star Trek: Lower Decks – that’s a good sign right there! It’s being executive produced by a whole team of talented folks including Dennis and Forest Willard, plus Marcus Bromander, Carl Neisser, the Prynoskis (Chris and Shannon), Antonio Canobbio, and Ben Kalina. CBS Eye Animation Productions and Innersloth are partnering up to bring it all to life, which feels like a solid combination.

The game Among Us initially came out in 2018, but it became hugely popular in 2020. This was partly because people shared videos of themselves playing online, and also because the game provided a way to socialize while many were staying home due to the pandemic. By the end of 2020, it had been downloaded over 100 million times. Given the recent success of turning video games into other forms of entertainment, it wasn’t surprising that Among Us would eventually get its own adaptation.
