It’s a Beautiful Day to Check in With Grey’s Anatomy’s Former Stars

For quite a while on Grey’s Anatomy, Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman have struggled to express their feelings for each other.

After a lot of uncertainty about their relationship, there’s now hope that the couple will finally begin their life together after leaving the show.

Grey’s Anatomy is saying goodbye to Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver after 18 and 12 seasons, respectively. Show creator Shonda Rhimes has promised their final episode on May 7th won’t involve a shocking, dramatic accident – no sudden car crashes, plane disasters, or fatal electrical mishaps – to explain their departures.

LeAnn Rimes shared that it’s been wonderful seeing Owen and Teddy’s relationship grow over time – they always manage to reconnect. She said it feels both sad and happy to finally give them the satisfying conclusion their story has earned.

Although Scott McKidd is starting a new role as the lead in ITV’s upcoming drama, The Only Suspect, his exit from the show is still a huge shock and deeply felt by his fellow cast members.

Camilla Luddington recently told TopMob News that filming the show is emotionally challenging, especially as the current season comes to a close. She described the cast as a family, explaining that after working together for many episodes – currently 18, but sometimes up to 25 with Kevin – they’ve become very close.

She’s hopeful though, that this is more of a see you later than a firm goodbye.

The long-time cast member, who has been on the show for 14 seasons (second only to original stars James Pickens Jr., Chandra Wilson, and Ellen Pompeo, who now appears part-time), admitted it will be odd filming without them but expressed hope they’ll return next season in an interview with TopMob.

It wouldn’t be the first time a former doctor from the show made a return appearance. As the series finishes its 22nd season, it’s a great time to see what some of its past cast members are up to.

During the third season, Burke unexpectedly left Cristina at their wedding and disappeared. He later achieved success, winning a prestigious Harper Avery award and eventually relocating to Zurich, Switzerland, where he founded a cutting-edge hospital. He built a life there, getting married and having a family. Years later, in season ten, he asked Cristina to take over his hospital as he prepared to retire.

Isaiah Washington was fired from the show after reports surfaced that he used a homophobic slur against his co-star, T.R. Knight, during an on-set argument with Patrick Dempsey. His attempts to defend himself only worsened the situation. However, he later reconciled with ABC and made a guest appearance in 2014.

Washington publicly apologized for the incident and acknowledged he needs to do some personal reflection. He stated he’s seeking help to address these issues.

I’ve been a huge fan of Isaiah Washington ever since his days on Grey’s Anatomy, and I’ve happily followed his career since then. It was sad to see his character, Thelonious Jaha, killed off in season five of The 100, but I was thrilled to see him land a role in P-Valley – it’s a fantastic show and he’s amazing in it!

Izzie Stevens battled cancer, found love with Alex Karev, and overcame the illness, but she unexpectedly left Seattle during season six. She briefly returned, explaining she no longer felt connected to the city. Eventually, Alex received divorce papers, and it was revealed Izzie had secretly given birth to their twins. She’s now living on a ranch in Kansas and working as a surgeon.

Katherine Heigl’s departure from the show started in 2008 when she asked to be removed from Emmy consideration, feeling the writing wasn’t strong enough. By 2010, her character was gone entirely. Although she later expressed interest in returning, creator Shonda Rhimes decided against it, stating in 2015 that she had moved past that storyline.

Katherine Heigl first became well-known for romantic comedies, appearing in several before returning to television. She starred in shows like State of Affairs, Doubt, and had a role in Suits. Most recently, she was a lead in Firefly Lane, which concluded in 2023.

Norman joined the show in its fourth season, but people often mistook him for a doctor instead of an intern because of how old he looked. He made a serious mistake by mistakenly telling a patient she was terminally ill, and later suffered a stroke. After successful surgery to remove a blood clot, he decided to switch his focus to psychiatry.

Edward Herrmann was a well-known actor, best remembered for playing Richard Gilmore on Gilmore Girls. Throughout his career, he also made appearances in popular shows like The Good Wife, Harry’s Law, and American Dad before passing away in 2014.

Sydney temporarily replaced Bailey while she was on maternity leave, and her overly enthusiastic personality often annoyed her coworkers. She briefly dated Derek, but her character was written off the show early in season four. She made a quick return for an episode in season 21, which aired in 2024.

Kali Rocha is an actress known for her roles on Disney’s Liv and Maddie and Man with a Plan, and she recently appeared in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2024.

One of the most heartbreaking moments in the series happens at the end of season five. George, having just committed to joining the army as a trauma surgeon, heroically saved a woman from being hit by a bus, but was struck himself. Arriving at the hospital in critical condition, he was unrecognizable until he wrote his nickname, “007,” on Meredith’s hand. Despite their best efforts, he couldn’t be saved and tragically died.

Following a period of backstage conflict, including a reported incident where Isaiah Washington used offensive language towards him, actor Knight had issues with the direction of his character’s storylines and the limited presence of his co-star George at the start of season five. As a result, Knight requested to be let out of his contract.

Knight revisited Shondaland in 2017 with a role on The Catch, and has since appeared in shows like The Good Wife, 11.22.63, and Genius. From 2019 to 2024, he provided voice work for The Bravest Knight. He also starred alongside Kaley Cuoco in the HBO Max series The Flight Attendant, which aired from 2020 to 2022.

He also returned to Grey’s for one episode to meet Meredith during her COVID-19 coma in season 17.

Erica Hahn and Callie Torres were in a promising relationship, but it ended when Erica discovered Izzie Stevens had disconnected Denny Duquette’s life-support device, hoping to save him. The heart Denny ultimately received had come from one of Erica’s patients. When Callie wouldn’t report this incident, Erica broke up with her and resigned from her job at the beginning of season five.

Brooke Smith continued her career with roles in popular TV shows like Bosch, Bates Motel, Supergirl, The Good Doctor, Chicago Med, and The Good Fight. She also appeared in the 2019 film Bombshell.

Most recently, she had arcs in Ryan Murphy‘s Grotesquerie, The Recruit and The Hunting Party

Ryan, who previously played the intern, left the show early in season six. Brandon Scott has recently appeared in several popular Netflix series, including Dead to Me, 13 Reasons Why, This Is Us, and The Good Doctor.

Megan was known for being involved in a lot of drama during her time as an intern on Grey’s Anatomy. Her complicated love life included a relationship with Pierce, but she also had a brief affair with Steve, which led to a near-fatal confrontation between the two men. To further complicate things, Megan became pregnant with Steve’s child and eventually married him. She hasn’t appeared on the show since season six, after Derek Shepherd brought her back on staff.

Since her role on Grey’s Anatomy, Molly Kidder has continued to act, appearing in shows like Outsourced in 2010 and several independent films. More recently, in 2025, she had a small role as an extra in Ghosts.

Pierce, who was part of a complicated love triangle with Megan and Steve, left the show in season six after being laid off. Since then, the actor who played Pierce, Joe Williamson, has appeared in shows like Here and Now and the 2019 film Ford v Ferrari, alongside Christian Bale and Matt Damon.

Steve completed the office’s love triangle by marrying Megan and having a child with her. He also managed to keep his job through several rounds of layoffs, lasting until the eighth season of the show, after which he disappeared from the storyline.

Since leaving Grey’s Anatomy, Mark Saul has been on several other television shows, including Franklin & Bash, Mom, The Great Indoors, Grace & Frankie, Modern Family, and I Think You Should Leave.

Let me tell you, life throws curveballs, even for our favorite TV characters! Nurse Olivia went through a tough time when the hospital merged and she lost her job, but she popped back up a few seasons later under some pretty stressful circumstances. She was visiting family in Seattle when her son accidentally swallowed a toy – talk about a mom’s worst nightmare! And who ended up treating him? None other than Alex, a guy from her past, which led to a very awkward conversation with his then-fiancée, Jo. It was a moment full of history and definitely a lot to unpack!

Since leaving the show Grey’s Anatomy in 2009, Sarah Utterback has appeared in several television shows, including Reception and Mysteries of Laura. Most recently, in 2024, she had a small part in 9-1-1.

Graciella, who was last seen as an intern during the hospital shooting in season six, has been consistently working as an actress. Recently, she had a role on How to Get Away with Murder and has made guest appearances on numerous shows, including S.W.A.T., The Good Doctor, American Housewife, Animal Kingdom, Snowfall, Criminal Minds, NCIS: LA, Anger Management, and Bones. She was also in the 2019 miniseries Reckoning and appeared as Rona in a 2024 episode of Tracker.

In season six, Nora became the first victim of Gary Clark’s attack on the hospital. He had gone there intending to kill Derek, and Nora was fatally shot in the head.

I’ve been a fan of Nora Zehetner for years! After loving her work on Grey’s Anatomy, I was thrilled to see her pop up in a few episodes of Mad Men. She’s consistently impressed me with her range, and I really enjoyed her roles in Designated Survivor and the 2019 series The Right Stuff. Most recently, I caught her in Grosse Pointe Garden Society in 2025 as Melissa – she’s just fantastic in everything she does!

Oh my god, Percy’s death… it was just awful! It wasn’t quick, you know? They locked him in a room with a patient – Mandy Moore was there! – and Bailey tried so hard to help, she really did. But then the elevators stopped working during the evacuation, and that was it. He didn’t stand a chance. It was so drawn out and heartbreaking, watching him… just terrible. I still can’t believe it!

Robert Baker has consistently worked as an actor, with roles in popular shows like Riverdale, Modern Family, and The Originals. He most recently played Otis Graves on Supergirl, and in 2025, he made a guest appearance on St. Denis Medical.

Dr. Lucy, an OBGYN, unexpectedly took a fantastic job opportunity in Africa that Alex was also hoping for. This happened partly because Alex hadn’t mentioned his potential plans to move to Africa. Lucy ended up moving instead, and viewers haven’t heard about her since the seventh season.

Rachael Taylor is widely recognized for her roles as Trish Walker, Jessica Jones’ friend, in the Netflix series Jessica Jones and The Defenders. More recently, she made an appearance in an episode of the 2024 show Hacks.

Addison, who started as Derek’s estranged and resentful wife, became a popular character and even got her own show. She last appeared regularly on Grey’s Anatomy in a memorable – and somewhat debated – musical episode during season seven, where she assisted in saving Callie after a car accident. She later made guest appearances, including a 2012 episode where Meredith fantasized about her mother being alive and happily married to Richard, and returned for another storyline in 2023.

She ended Private Practice married to Jake (Benjamin Bratt) with a son, Henry.

She’s known for her roles in shows like Fargo, Bad Judge, and 13 Reasons Why, as well as The Umbrella Academy, where she played a part in an apocalyptic event. More recently, she starred in the 2020 series Emily in Paris and made a guest appearance on Optics in 2025.

Losing Lexie was absolutely heartbreaking for me as a fan. Her death, in that awful plane crash, was one of the most devastating moments the show ever delivered. It was just brutal – she didn’t even make it back to the hospital alive, and seeing Mark Sloan beside her as she passed… I was a mess. It meant so much when she and Mark appeared to Meredith during her COVID coma, it felt like they’d found each other again, and that gave me a little peace knowing they were together somehow.

Chyler Leigh first appeared in the comedy series Taxi Brooklyn. She then became known for her strong and determined character, Alex Danvers, in Supergirl. More recently, since 2023, she’s been playing Kat Landry in the Hallmark series The Way Home.

Mark, known as ‘McSteamy,’ also died in the season eight plane crash, though not right away. He managed to get back to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries after a few days. Now, the hospital bears Mark and Lexie’s name, as the other plane crash survivors purchased it using funds from a lawsuit. In Meredith’s coma, Mark appeared alongside Lexie, suggesting they found each other again after death.

Eric Dane departed from the show to lead the cast of TNT’s The Last Ship, which concluded after five seasons in November 2018. He now stars in the HBO series Euphoria alongside Zendaya and is scheduled to appear in the highly anticipated third season.

In April 2025, the actor announced he had been diagnosed with ALS, a disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Do you remember Jo’s boyfriend from season nine, the OGYN resident? They had a big argument when he discovered she’d been keeping secrets, and it escalated into a physical fight. Jason ended up in the hospital with a head injury after falling. Alex talked him out of pressing charges against Jo, and he moved away – we never heard from him again.

Charles Michael Davis became well-known for his roles in several popular TV series. He starred in The Originals (The CW), Younger (TV Land), For the People (ABC), and Chicago P.D. (NBC). His most recent appearance was in a 2022 episode of Legacies.

In season 10, the intern Heather tragically died during a major storm. She was electrocuted while attempting to help Dr. Richard Webber.

Tina Majorino most recently appeared on CBS’ Scorpion and an episode of The Good Doctor.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen how impactful mentorship can be, and Dr. Herman was definitely that for Arizona Williams, though she came across as incredibly tough. It turned out her strictness stemmed from a deeply personal struggle – she was battling a massive, terminal brain tumor. Amelia stepped in and miraculously removed it, but unfortunately, the surgery resulted in her losing her sight, and she decided to leave Seattle. But their connection didn’t end there! She came back later, and in a beautiful full-circle moment, provided Arizona with the grant money she needed to pursue her dream of opening a women’s health center in New York, which ultimately allowed Arizona to move on to a new chapter as well.

Geena Davis appeared in the 2016 Fox series The Exorcist and later returned to Grey’s Anatomy. More recently, she’s had roles in the Netflix show GLOW and the She-Ra animated reboot. Currently, she primarily works behind the scenes as a producer, most notably executive producing Mission Unstoppable With Miranda Cosgrove.

After a difficult recovery from the plane crash, Cristina Yang faced another setback when she didn’t win the Harper Avery award. She realized her current hospital wouldn’t allow her to achieve that recognition and considered her next steps. An opportunity arose when her former love, Preston Burke, offered her a position running his state-of-the-art hospital in Zurich, allowing him to retire and focus on his family. Following a final celebration with Meredith, she left in season 10.

Sandra Oh is a hugely popular TV actress, best known for her role as Eve in the award-winning series Killing Eve, for which she received a Golden Globe. Similar to Geena Davis, she also appears in the Netflix show She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Additionally, she provides voice work for a character in Robert Kirkman’s animated series, Invincible.

Shane started as an overconfident intern and became a resident, pushing himself to the point of exhaustion. He developed a close relationship with Cristina and eventually asked to join her in Zurich, which she allowed.

Gaius Charles, best known for playing Smash Williams in Friday Night Lights, has also appeared in Aquarius and Taken. He recently starred in The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Derek Shepherd went through a difficult period when he took a job with President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. He wanted his family to join him, but Meredith didn’t want to move, leading to a period of separation. Eventually, Derek realized he needed to be closer to home and found a way to do his job remotely so they could be together.

After finally finding happiness with Mer in season 11, he was driving back to resolve a few remaining issues when he came across a serious car crash. He spent hours helping those injured, but as he returned to his own car, he was struck by a truck. Sadly, the hospital he was taken to wasn’t equipped to handle severe trauma, and doctors didn’t order a crucial CT scan of his head, which ultimately led to his death.

Patrick Dempsey explained he left Grey’s Anatomy because the storylines were becoming difficult to maintain and he wanted more family time, so he requested to be released from his contract. After leaving the show, he appeared in Bridget Jones’ Baby, the miniseries The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, the series Devils, and even commercials referencing his former role as a TV doctor. Currently, he’s starring in Dexter: Original Sin.

He shockingly returned to Grey’s for a series of dream sequences in season 17.

Leah Murphy had a difficult journey on the show. She was fired mid-way through season 10 because she struggled as a surgeon. Surprisingly, she reappeared in season 13, working alongside Maggie, but her return was short-lived and she quickly disappeared again.

In 2019, Tessa Ferrer appeared in the Hulu miniseries Catch-22 alongside George Clooney. More recently, in 2024, she starred in Grotesquerie.

Callie moved to New York when her girlfriend, Penny, received a prestigious job offer. Initially, after a heartbreaking custody loss with Arizona, Callie planned to remain in Seattle. However, Arizona ultimately changed her mind and allowed Callie to take their daughter, Sofia, with her at the end of season twelve.

Sara Ramirez departed their role to join the cast of CBS’s Madame Secretary. They later became known for playing the controversial character Che Diaz in the HBO series And Just Like That, a continuation of Sex and the City. In 2024, Ramirez also provided the voice for Amber in Velma.

Penelope’s time at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital was challenging. She started off with a difficult introduction – being known as one of the doctors linked to Derek’s death and having to work under a frustrated Meredith. Later, when she landed a great job in New York and Callie joined her, it sparked a painful custody fight between Callie and Arizona. They’ve since broken up, which led to Arizona moving to New York, but their relationship always seemed destined to fail.

Samantha Sloyan became known for her role as Leigh in The Haunting of Hill House, and she’s also appeared in shows like SEAL Team and The Rookie. Most recently, in 2025, she returned to medical dramas with a role in The Pitt.

Oh my god, Season 13 was brutal! When Dr. Minnick showed up to replace Webber as the teaching doctor, it was a disaster. Seriously, everyone despised her – even Meredith got suspended for standing up to her! And can you believe she got fired because she was so fixated on rules that she didn’t tell the police Stephanie was missing during that fire?! Stephanie almost died! It was just… awful. I still get mad thinking about it!

Oh my gosh, can you believe it? Marika Dominczyk actually ended up on Whiskey Cavalier – even though the show didn’t last long, it was AMAZING to see her! And get this – she was with her husband, Scott Foley! Scott, as in, the Scott Foley from Grey’s?! It was seriously the cutest thing, and I was SO excited when I found out they were working together on screen. I was heartbroken when Whiskey Cavalier got cancelled, but at least we got to see them share the screen!

Okay, so after everything Stephanie went through – seriously, months of being heartbroken over Kyle (Wilmer Valderrama, UGH, he was the best!) and then almost dying in a fire?! – she just…needed a change. It was the end of season 13, and honestly, I totally get it. She needed to escape and find herself, try something new after all that trauma. I was so worried about her, but also, a little bit excited to see where she’d go!

I’ve been a fan of Jerrika Hinton ever since her days on Grey’s Anatomy, so I was thrilled to see her in HBO’s Here and Now back in 2018. I really enjoyed her role as a Nazi hunter in Amazon’s Hunters too! Most recently, I caught her in The Accused in 2024, playing a character named Lycia – she’s just so talented and always delivers a great performance.

In early season 14, Nathan left Grey Sloan after his longtime love, Megan Hunt, was finally rescued after being held captive for ten years. They moved to Los Angeles with Megan’s adopted child to start a new life together. While this ended his developing romance with Meredith, it was a very happy outcome for Nathan.

Martin Henderson, known for being in Britney Spears’ “Toxic” music video, went on to star in the series Virgin River until 2024.
