‘It’s Slick’: The Landman Cast Told Me What The Oil They Get Covered In Actually Is (And How Long It Takes To Wash Off)

The show Landman is full of risks, particularly when oil is being extracted. This was clear in the first season, and it will continue to be a theme when the second season airs in 2025. The trailers show Cooper and the rest of the crew getting covered in oil, so I was curious to know what exactly they’re doused with on set and how difficult it is to clean off.

I recently spoke with Jacob Lofland and Paulina Chávez, who star as Cooper and Ariana in the upcoming season of Landman, available on Paramount+. They shared some insights into what viewers can expect. As Cooper gets more involved in the oil industry, he’s facing new and challenging situations – and a lot of oil! He’s going to find himself completely immersed in this world, both figuratively and literally.

I was curious about what actors are actually covered in during scenes with oil on set. After a lot of joking around, here’s what they explained about the fake oil they use:

  • Jacob Lofland: I’m not going to lie, I always made the joke that it was KY Jelly, because it felt exactly like some kind of like water-based…
  • Paulina Chávez: Oh, it’s glycerin.
  • Jacob Lofland: Yeah, and it tasted kinda funny.
  • Paulina Chávez: You said, ‘KY,’ and I’m like, ‘It’s glycerin.’
  • Jacob Lofland: Well, anyway, it’s the closest thing I’ve got to glycerin. Alright? I know that it comes…anyway.

As you can see, the substance covering Lofland that appears to be oil is actually glycerin. And, as you might expect, it’s quite difficult to remove.

Regarding the cleanup time after a major oil spill, Lofland explained that removing everything isn’t always possible. Sometimes, the oil simply needs to naturally break down over time.

Speaking about cleaning up after a big scene that involves oil, the Cooper actor said:

It was surprisingly long-lasting – it stayed in my hair for about three days! We eventually managed to wash it out, though it mostly wore off on its own. Filming that scene was a lot of fun, especially getting to pour oil all over the set.

As a film and TV fanatic, I have to say Chávez was right – that scene looks amazing. The trailer and stills from Landman Season 2 (check one out below!) show these incredibly dramatic oil moments. Seriously, I’m on the edge of my seat wondering what it all means! I need to know why that oil blew up, and how it’s going to impact Cooper, Tommy, and the whole operation. Bring on the new season!

Paramount+ subscriptions start at $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year. It’s where you can watch shows created by Taylor Sheridan, including the second season of Landman, which begins streaming on November 16th.

Subscriptions begin at $7.99 monthly, with a Premium option available for $12.99 per month. See the deal here.

I’m optimistic that Cooper will have a more developed storyline this season, similar to what we’ll see with Cami. He was important in the first season, but I’d like to see him become a key contender for power in the second, and I think the oil storyline could be how they achieve that.

Wow, after that season finale of Landman, things are really shaken up now that Monty’s gone. The power struggles are going to be intense, I can feel it! And the trailer has me completely hooked – Tommy says Cooper’s ‘playing with the devil’s money,’ which is such a cryptic line. I’m really excited to see what that means for his work and how it all unfolds.

You can find out why Cooper ends up covered in oil by watching Landman on Sunday, November 16th. New episodes will then be released every week on Paramount+.
