Jake Reiner’s life was forever changed on Dec. 14.
As a longtime admirer of the Reiner family, it’s incredibly moving to see Rob Reiner’s son, the eldest child of Michele and Rob, finally sharing his story. He’s written a deeply personal essay, ‘Mom and Dad,’ about learning the heartbreaking news of his parents’ murder from his sister, Romy, and how he’s been coping with everything since. It’s a truly vulnerable and honest look at his grief and journey.
In an essay posted on Substack, Jake shared that he was attending a memorial service for his friend, Christian Anderson, at Union Station on December 14th when he received devastating news. His sister, Romy, called to tell him their father had passed away, and just minutes later, she called again to say their mother had also died.
The 34-year-old described the subsequent car ride to his parents’ home as “unendurable.”
He said everything had fallen apart. He felt numb and lost, and all he could think about was getting back to his childhood home and finding his sister. He desperately needed to understand what had just occurred.
On the evening of December 13th, famed film director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party with their son, Nick Reiner, age 32. Later that night, they were found murdered in their home. Hours after the discovery, Nick was arrested and charged with their murders, though he has entered a plea of not guilty.
As someone who’s seen the long-term impact of trauma, I can tell you that violence doesn’t just cause immediate pain – it steals futures. For Jake, it meant losing the chance to share life’s biggest moments with his parents – they won’t be there to celebrate his wedding, meet his children, or see him succeed in his career. He put it so powerfully: it’s a heartbreak that fuels his anger, and honestly, it’s a feeling I hear echoed by so many others who’ve experienced similar loss.

It’s impossible to describe the shock of losing both my parents suddenly. It’s just… overwhelming, more than I ever thought possible. Even now, I wake up every day and have to remind myself it wasn’t a bad dream – this is actually my life now, and it’s unbelievably painful.
Jake also mentioned he keeps thinking about how scared those involved must have felt.
It absolutely broke my heart to hear him say it. He was right, though. They were the most deserving people I knew, and what happened to them was just…wrong. They deserved all the love, respect, and appreciation in the world, especially considering everything they gave to us – to all of us, and to everyone around them. It just wasn’t fair.
Later in his essay, Jake wrote about his parents. He fondly remembered their shared passion for musicals, how his mother always hosted Thanksgiving for the whole family, and that she was always available whenever he needed her.
Jake fondly remembered sharing a love of baseball with his father, and they spent years going to Dodgers games together—a tradition passed down from his grandfather, Carl Reiner. When Jake decided to switch from broadcasting to acting, his father was completely supportive.

He acknowledged he was lucky to have had amazing opportunities thanks to his parents, opportunities most people only dream of. However, he’d give it all up – every baseball game, every show, every trip – just to have one more hour with them, to say a proper goodbye.
In addition to saying Romy, 28, would share her feelings later, Jake asked for kindness and sympathy as he and his sister cope with this incredibly difficult time.
He described a horrific night where he lost over half of his family. While losing a parent is always incredibly painful, he emphasized that losing both parents simultaneously was far worse, especially knowing his brother was involved in the tragedy.
He acknowledged that people are seeking explanations about the events that occurred. While some answers will eventually be revealed, he explained that certain details are deeply personal to his family and must remain private to safeguard the remaining fragments of something they’ve lost.
Jake and Romy are trying to cope with their brother’s arrest, and are taking things one day at a time. Here’s a deeper look at the heartbreaking situation.

Oh my gosh, it’s just so heartbreaking. Even before losing Rob and Michele, their son, Nick, was so open about his own struggles with addiction. It’s amazing, actually, because he and his dad even made a movie together, Being Charlie, back in 2015 – it was all about substance abuse. It feels like they were trying to warn us, or maybe just connect with anyone else going through something similar. It just adds another layer to the tragedy, you know?
Nick explained that he had been to rehab 18 times before turning 30.
In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he recounted experiencing homelessness in three different states: Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. He described spending nights and weeks living on the streets, calling it a difficult time.
Two years later, Nick recalled an instance when he “wrecked” his home while high on drugs.
He described an incident from 2018 on the Dopey podcast, explaining that he spent ten rounds sparring in his guest house while high on stimulants—likely cocaine and another drug. He was awake for days and began damaging things in the guest house by punching them.

According to sources who spoke with The New York Times, Nick was under a court-ordered mental health conservatorship from 2020 to 2021. A Los Angeles Superior Court clerk verified that the conservatorship ended in 2021.
Steven Baer, the court-appointed conservator and a licensed fiduciary, told the New York Times that mental illness is a widespread and often misunderstood issue, calling the situation a “horrible tragedy.” He did not offer any further details.

According to multiple sources at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13, 2025, director Rob Reiner and his 32-year-old son, Nick, had a significant argument. Friends of the family later confirmed the fight to the L.A. Times, adding that guests observed Nick behaving unusually.
According to two people familiar with the event, Nick was causing a disturbance at the party by interrupting people’s conversations.

Jane Fonda saw Rob and Michele the night before their tragic deaths.
I was so happy to see them just two nights ago – they seemed so full of life and joy. I’m absolutely heartbroken and still in shock over the news. It’s just devastating.

On December 14th, around 3:40 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department investigated a death at a home in Brentwood, California, following a call they received the day after a Christmas party.
According to a statement from the LAPD, officers found two people inside the home, later identified as Robert and Michele Reiner.
The Robbery-Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section began investigating how the deaths occurred.
According to NBC News, Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stated that investigators will be speaking with many family members. Rob Reiner and his wife have three children: Nick, Romy, and Jake. Rob also adopted the daughter of his late ex-wife, Penny Marshall, named Tracy Reiner.

Rob and Michele didn’t die from natural causes; they appeared to have been stabbed, according to a source close to the Reiner family who spoke with NBC News.
After looking into the situation, the LAPD has confirmed that the Reiners were, unfortunately, victims of homicide. It’s a tragic case, and our thoughts are with their loved ones. As someone who often focuses on creating safe and positive environments, news like this is always deeply upsetting, and highlights the importance of community support and vigilance.

Around 9 p.m. on December 14th, while the police were investigating, Nick was caught on camera buying a Gatorade at an ARCO gas station near USC in downtown Los Angeles. Footage obtained by MS NOW shows he was wearing a green jacket, jeans, and a ballcap, and carrying a red backpack.

Minutes later, the screenwriter was taken into custody near USC.
As a longtime follower of this case, it’s heartbreaking to hear the LAPD officially state that Rob and Michele’s son was the one responsible for their tragic deaths. It’s a devastating conclusion to a truly awful situation, and I feel deeply for everyone affected.
Police announced that Nick Reiner was arrested around 9:15 p.m. on December 15th. He has been charged with murder and is being held in jail without the possibility of bail.

Michelle Obama shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on December 15th that she and Barack Obama had planned to meet with Rob and Michele on the day they tragically passed away.

On December 16th, attorney Alan Jackson—known for previously defending high-profile clients like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and Karen Read—told TopMob News that he now represents Nick, who was arrested two days prior in connection with his parents’ murder.

On December 16th, as authorities prepared to announce charges against Nick at a Los Angeles courthouse, his lawyer informed the press that he hadn’t been given medical approval to appear in court.
I’m just glued to the news, and I heard the DA saying they can’t even bring him to court until he gets a medical check-up. Seriously? A check-up?! It’s like they’re delaying this on purpose! But apparently, they’re hoping he’ll pass it tomorrow, and then, finally, we might actually get to see him in court. I can’t even breathe thinking about it!

On December 16th, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that his office will charge Nick with two counts of first-degree murder, and will also pursue a special circumstance allegation due to the multiple victims involved.
The District Attorney also stated that Nick will be charged with using a deadly weapon – a knife – during the attack on his parents.
He explained that if convicted, the maximum punishment could be life in prison with no chance of release, or even the death penalty.
Nick was formally charged Dec. 16.

Police believe Rob and Michele were likely killed about 12 hours before their bodies were found around 3 p.m. on December 14th.
According to a press release on December 16th, the murders happened around dawn on December 14th.

I was shocked to hear the news – Nick is being accused of murdering his parents. According to the District Attorney’s statement from December 16th, he’s alleged to have stabbed them to death, and apparently, he used a knife as the weapon. It’s just awful.

Nick made his first court appearance on December 17th at the Los Angeles Supreme Court. He arrived wearing a blue garment designed to prevent self-harm and was in shackles. He didn’t enter a plea at this time, but scheduled an arraignment for January 7th.

I was heartbroken to learn the official cause of death for Rob and Michele. The medical examiner confirmed they both died from multiple sharp-force injuries – basically, several cuts or stabs from a sharp object. It’s just devastating.

During a court appearance on January 7, 2026, Nick’s lawyer, Alan Jackson, informed the court he was no longer representing him. Nick will now be represented by a public defender, as reported by a journalist from MS NOW who was present.
The Reiner family released a statement to TopMob News saying they are confident in the legal system and won’t be making any further comments about the ongoing case.
