Jason Momoa’s remake of the action film Conan the Barbarian, which received negative reviews when it was released, is now finding success as a free streaming option. Momoa plays Conan, a man seeking revenge for the destruction of his village and the death of everyone in it except for him. The film currently has a 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
This film wasn’t one of Jason Momoa’s strongest performances, receiving negative reviews and failing to make a profit at the box office. While it cost $90 million to make, it only earned $63.5 million worldwide. Despite these issues, it did receive one award nomination – for Best Make-Up at the Saturn Awards.
After a slow start in cinemas nearly 15 years ago, Conan the Barbarian is now a huge hit on streaming. Tubi reports the movie is going viral on their platform, proving that streaming services can give older films a second life and a new audience.
I’m a big fan of Jason Momoa, and I really enjoyed his take on Conan the Barbarian. It’s a remake of the classic film that launched Arnold Schwarzenegger into superstardom back in 1982. Even though critics were divided, the original Conan was a huge hit and really made Arnold a global name. It even spawned a sequel, Conan the Destroyer, a few years later, but it didn’t quite reach the same level of success as the first one.
Despite initially flopping with critics and audiences, the movie is now surprisingly popular on Tubi, suggesting continued interest. This is likely due to Jason Momoa’s rising fame since the film’s release, thanks to well-known roles like Aquaman (in the former DC Universe) and Baba Voss in the Apple TV+ series See.
He recently played the funny character Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison in A Minecraft Movie and Ka’iana in the popular Apple TV miniseries Chief of War, which he also helped write and create. He’s next set to appear as Lobo in the Supergirl movie and will reprise his role as Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Three.
The recent interest in Conan the Barbarian is likely due to its exciting action scenes, which really showcase Jason Momoa’s physical abilities and fight choreography. Combined with his success in other roles since then, this explains why the movie has found a new audience. Despite not being well-received by critics, people are still enjoying it.
