Jessica Jones’ Daughter, Danielle, Explained: Marvel Comics History, Powers, Father & MCU Future

Jessica Jones recently returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. This version of Jessica is quite different from what we’ve seen before. She’s no longer a struggling, traumatized private investigator, but a mother who appears to have moved away from New York City. However, her past quickly catches up with her. Agents working for a partner of Wilson Fisk, Mr. Charles, attacked her home, much to Jessica’s anger.

It makes sense why she’s left New York – it’s connected to the strange things happening with Jessica’s abilities. Season 3 of Jessica Jones took place in 2018, before Thanos’ snap, and now, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s 2027. Over those nine years, Jessica secretly had a daughter named Danielle. The show playfully avoids revealing who the father is, but fans of the comics will likely have a good idea.

Danielle Cage-Jones is the Daughter of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage

Danielle, the daughter of superheroes Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, is portrayed by twin sisters Isabella and Annabelle Ivlev. Though she first appeared in Marvel comics in 2006, the timeline within comics is unique—she’s currently only three years old, meaning two decades of comic book stories have unfolded within those three years. Her beginnings are a bit unusual: in the comics, Jessica was dating Scott Lang when she and Luke Cage had a brief encounter, resulting in Danielle’s birth. They later became a couple and eventually got married.

Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again doesn’t offer much insight into Jessica and Luke’s relationship, and seems to be deliberately keeping it under wraps. It looks like they’re saving their story for a later episode, and fans are hoping to see Mike Colter reprise his role as Luke Cage. The show hints that Luke is currently working abroad for a man named Mr. Charles, but he’ll likely be upset when he discovers what’s been going on once he returns home.

Danielle Cage is a Future Avenger

Danielle Cage is a significant character in Marvel comics, largely because she was raised within the superhero world. She spent her childhood in Avengers Tower, with Luke and Jessica Jones employing the uniquely capable Squirrel Girl as her babysitter. Known for her quirky personality and surprising victories over powerful villains like Doctor Doom and Galactus, Squirrel Girl was an ideal choice to care for the daughter of two Avengers.

Let me tell you about Danielle – her destiny as a superhero was practically foretold before she even arrived! It’s a wild story, actually. Her mom, Jessica, discovered she was pregnant through visions of Danielle’s future. And what a future it is! Every possible timeline shows Danielle inheriting the powers of both her parents, Jessica and Luke. We’re talking seriously powerful – practically invincible, with a knockout punch. But it’s not just about strength; she’s got a strong moral compass, too. In some futures, she becomes Captain America, and in others, she’s proven worthy to wield Mjolnir – that’s Thor’s hammer, folks! – and all his power. This kid isn’t just powerful, she’s destined for greatness.

What Danielle Means for the MCU’s Future

Danielle represents the potential future of the Marvel Universe. That’s why she appears in so many different future scenarios – in positive timelines, she’s a hero like Captain America or Thor, while in darker futures, her death emphasizes how terrible things have become. In the comics, the character is kept perpetually young, around three or four years old, due to Marvel’s flexible timeline. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe can’t use this trick, because time genuinely passes in the MCU, meaning this version of Danielle will grow up.

This isn’t necessarily a negative development. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is designed to evolve over time, which differs from the comics. This suggests that Danielle’s character is meant to be a long-term addition, and her story will likely continue in the third season of Daredevil: Born Again, and potentially in future seasons of Jessica Jones. As she ages, she might discover her abilities and find a place on a team like the Young Avengers or Champions.

The big mystery right now is how Danielle’s birth is affecting Jessica’s superpowers. Jessica gained her abilities through experiments with IGH, which seems to be inspired by a growth hormone, probably one for Inhumans. Since her powers came from a hormone treatment, it’s logical that Danielle would have absorbed some of that hormone while developing in the womb. This creates a potential weakness for Jessica, but also suggests Danielle could become incredibly powerful.
