Please be aware that this contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 4, “Of Myths and Monsters.” Although Julie hasn’t fully embraced the title of “storywalker,” her abilities are crucial to uncovering the mysteries of the town.
Hannah Cheramy plays Julie, a teenager frustrated with her family who runs away during a road trip. She finds refuge in Colony House, a secluded mansion that operates independently from the town and houses a group of people living together. Later, Julie discovers she has a unique ability: she’s a “storywalker” who can travel through time. However, this gift comes with a painful realization – she can witness the past, but is powerless to alter it.
Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant interviewed Cheramy about her character in the popular sci-fi horror mystery series, and how her character’s unique ability to walk through walls might be the key to rescuing the town from a terrifying, otherworldly predicament.
How Her Father’s Death Forces Her Fully Into Storywalking
Though Julie needed some distance from her family, she still deeply loved her father, which made his death in season 3 especially heartbreaking. Fans will remember Jim being killed in a violent attack by the Man in Yellow, a moment that deeply affected the entire Matthews family. According to Cheramy, despite a sometimes difficult relationship with both parents, Jim’s death has only strengthened Julie’s determination to continue story walking.
Hannah Cheramy believes her sister isn’t fully facing her grief. Instead, she seems to be in denial, struggling to accept what’s happened and desperately trying to fix the situation because she relies heavily on their father. This is especially difficult because, after a previous family loss, both Tabitha and Jim weren’t very present for Julie, and she feels like she just recently reconnected with her dad. She’s afraid of losing that connection again.
Julie is still learning to control her ability to ‘story walk,’ and a previous attempt to change the past – to save her father – didn’t go well. Now, her mentor, Randall, is hesitant to let her try again, worried about the risks involved, so it’s uncertain when she’ll use this power again.
It was a really tough moment for her, and she was understandably upset. Despite the setback, she immediately wanted to try again, telling Randall she’d be ready next time. He shut that down quickly, telling her there wouldn’t be a next time and that she was risking her life. I think that really hurt her, making her question if she was being naive and putting too much faith in her own abilities, especially since she thought Randall believed in her. It’s hard to say how long she’ll be affected by this, we’ll just have to see what happens.
The Impact Of The Man In Yellow
While walking, she experiences visions of the Man in Yellow harming people – a disturbing scene that mirrors the photos Henry and Victor unearth. Though Randall quickly pulls Julie from the ruins after only a minute, the experience is deeply unsettling for her, and Cheramy describes it as chaotic and overwhelming.
Hannah isn’t sure if Julie fully understands the horrific event that happened to Victor. Julie knows some of his story, including that two cars arrived that day, but she’s missing crucial details. The scene is incredibly disturbing – many bodies are scattered around, and Julie’s immediate reaction is to escape. She hears a sickening sound behind her, turns around, and sees a man – the Man in Yellow – whom she’s never encountered before. It’s a completely overwhelming and chaotic situation for her, as she witnesses him eating people and struggles to understand what’s happening.
How Julie Could Be The Key To Solving The Town’s Biggest Mysteries
Even though Julie hasn’t mastered the art of ‘story walking’ yet, she’s determined to keep trying, regardless of what Randall thinks. After her attempt didn’t go well, she finds herself leaning on Randall for support more than she does her mother or brother, as she deals with the disappointment.
Hannah Cheramy believes Julie depends on Randall because he experiences the same sensations she does when they visit the ruins. She previously went with Ethan, but he wasn’t affected, proving it’s not a universal reaction. Julie and Randall share a connection through their shared trauma. She feels Randall understands what’s happening at the ruins in a way Tabitha doesn’t, even though Tabitha is very knowledgeable about the town’s mysteries and has secrets of her own. Julie likely believes Randall would be more empathetic to her experience than Tabitha would.
