Okay, so the Xbox Developer_Direct had another surprise! Turns out, the fourth game Double Fine was working on is… totally unexpected! It’s called Kiln, and it’s a multiplayer party game where you make pottery and then battle with it! Apparently, it started as a quick two-week project – a kind of game jam thing – and now it’s a full-on game! I’m really intrigued to see how this plays out.
In this game, you begin as a spirit with the power to shape clay into a physical form. You’ll then participate in Quench, a 4v4 team mode where the goal is to carry water and extinguish the opposing team’s kiln. Be prepared for a fight, though – other players will try to stop you!
Every character—or ‘pot’—can perform basic actions like running, jumping, attacking, and rolling. However, each pot’s unique shape also gives it special abilities. These shapes are also useful for exploring the game’s levels, which are built around fragments of the past. Certain pots can even find hidden tunnels, and you can create temporary walls by pouring water onto sponges.
Once a match ends, you’ll go back to the main menu, called the Wedge, where you can unlock new features using XP and in-game currency. Kiln is scheduled to release this Spring on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5, and a limited beta test will be available soon. The developers at Double Fine plan to continue supporting the game after launch with new content.
