There’s been some discussion about the creative choices in Lanterns, the upcoming HBO series from Chris Mundy debuting this August. However, it’s clear that its realistic style is a fresh take for superhero shows. In a world of often overly-stylized and superficial entertainment, Lanterns seems to be prioritizing substance, which is a major reason we included it in our Summer 2026 Preview.
In an interview with ComicBook, Seth Mundy discussed the approach to the new Green Lantern series. He was asked if it was difficult to move away from typical superhero storytelling and create something more in line with HBO’s acclaimed dramas. Mundy responded that it wasn’t challenging, but rather exciting. He explained that they wanted to draw on the extensive lore of Green Lantern while also capturing the feel of successful HBO shows like The Sopranos and Game of Thrones.
Fans Can Expect Something Entirely New From Lanterns
Mundy explained that the goal was to create a complex and engaging story focused on the characters themselves, while still honoring what fans love about the original comics. They aimed to make the show enjoyable for both newcomers and longtime fans familiar with every detail. While balancing these needs was difficult, Mundy felt it was a rewarding challenge. Despite some criticism from those hoping for a more action-packed, Marvel-style show, Mundy and the team seem confident they’ve met the mark.
Many longtime fans of DC and Green Lantern are optimistic about this new creative path. One fan commented that seeing negative reactions from other DC enthusiasts actually makes them more excited, because those fans’ tastes often differ from their own. Another expressed surprise and approval that the series is drawing inspiration from the ‘Hard Traveling Heroes’ era of Green Lantern, noting that this approach feels well-suited for a TV budget and aligns with the overall tone of James Gunn’s DC Universe. Generally, this shift in direction seems to be establishing a unique and more grounded DCU, potentially offering a fresh look and storytelling style not just for Lanterns, but for all future series as well.
