Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are working together again on a new film. This project is particularly special for DiCaprio, as it represents something he hasn’t done in any of his movies since he started his career in 1991. Because it’s so different from their previous collaborations, the film is already generating a lot of buzz.
Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are frequent collaborators, having worked together on numerous films. Their partnership began with the 2002 movie Gangs of New York, and continued with leading roles for DiCaprio in five more of Scorsese’s films: The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).
Their projects are consistently praised by critics and often win awards. Their new film, What Happens At Night, is predicted to be just as successful, but it’s quite different from their past work. Based on Peter Cameron’s novel of the same title, What Happens At Night is a horror movie.
Martin Scorsese’s What Happens At Night Will Be Leonardo DiCaprio’s First Horror Film Since His Debut
Leonardo DiCaprio first appeared in a feature film in the 1991 horror movie Critters 3. Interestingly, he hasn’t been in another horror film since. While his third collaboration with Martin Scorsese, Shutter Island, might seem like a horror movie to some, it’s generally considered a psychological thriller with scary elements, rather than a true horror film.
After a 35-year break, Leonardo DiCaprio is back in the horror genre with What Happens At Night, marking his first horror film since Critters 3.
With horror films gaining more recognition from the Academy and recent successes like Sinners and The Substance winning awards, now might be a good time for Leonardo DiCaprio to try his hand at the genre. Throughout his career, he’s proven he can excel in a wide variety of film types.
He’s starred in leading roles across a wide range of films – from historical dramas and biopics to science fiction and even dark comedies. No matter the genre, he consistently demonstrates his incredible range as an actor. Because of this, it’s hard not to be excited to see how he’ll bring his character to life in the upcoming horror film, What Happens At Night.
With Martin Scorsese directing, the film is likely to receive numerous award nominations. If the movie is successful, both Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio could earn another nomination – and potentially win their second Oscar as a team.
Why Leonardo DiCaprio Avoided Horror After Critters 3
Leonardo DiCaprio showed impressive acting talent from the beginning of his career, even receiving his first Oscar nomination at just 19 years old for his role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. He quickly built a reputation as a dedicated actor and began working mostly with highly respected directors. Because horror films weren’t traditionally seen as artistically significant, they likely weren’t as appealing to him as other types of movies.
Although he directed several popular horror films like Orphan, Red Riding Hood, and Delirium, he hasn’t focused on the genre since his first movie. Leonardo DiCaprio has publicly disliked Critters 3 and his involvement with it, suggesting that his initial experience with horror films may have discouraged him from returning to it. He’s also consistently expressed a strong dislike for superhero movies.
While it’s doubtful Leonardo DiCaprio will ever appear in a superhero film, particularly as the popularity of that genre declines, he’s soon returning to horror movies. This project will be his seventh time working with director Martin Scorsese.
