Marvel Officially Confirms Minimalist Thing Costume For Marvel Cosmic Invasion DLC

The first of two planned updates for Marvel Cosmic Invasion is here, adding Cyclops from the X-Men and the Thing from the Fantastic Four as playable characters. Each new hero comes with a selection of different color schemes. These character skins aren’t complex costume changes, but rather unique palettes, and the 2D beat-’em-up game uses this simple pixel-art style to great effect.

Characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine will have multiple costume options in the game. Spider-Man can switch between his Iron Spider and Chasm suits, while Wolverine can choose from his classic X-Men look or his X-Force attire. While not every costume change needs a specific explanation, these alternate designs allow Marvel Cosmic Invasion to playfully reimagine well-known and beloved looks for the characters you play as, and that’s definitely true for The Thing as well.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion’s Thing Is Quite Colorful

The pixelated art style of Marvel Cosmic Invasion makes it difficult to accurately represent characters with intricate designs. Furthermore, the game doesn’t clearly indicate which costumes the different color palettes are supposed to be. However, here’s what Thing’s color options appear to be based on:

  • Palettes that dress Thing in a bodysuit inspired by Thing’s unitard costume (from various comic book source material, but chiefly Ultimate Fantastic Four).
  • A molten lava palette inspired by Thing’s Angrir Thing appearance (from Fear Itself #3).
  • A blue palette potentially inspired by Ultimate Fantastic Four’s Blue Thing appearance (from Ultimate Fantastic Four #41).
  • A green palette potentially inspired by Thing’s appearance as Brute (from Spider-Girl #57).
  • A shimmering palette potentially inspired by Thing’s Infinity Thing appearance (from Avengers: Forever Vol. 2 #1).

Surprisingly, the game didn’t use a white color scheme to match Thing’s classic Future Foundation costume – which would have been even better if the other Fantastic Four members also had their own white looks. Instead, Marvel Cosmic Invasion opted for green and brown colors that don’t seem to be based on any specific costume design.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion Palettes Do A Lot Of Heavy Lifting

The Thing from the Fantastic Four isn’t known for having a flashy wardrobe. However, the Marvel Cosmic Invasion game has done a great job of giving him color schemes that suit him and reflect the variety of his appearances in the comics.

The full bodysuit is arguably his most recognizable look, even more so than just showing off his orange, bare chest. It’s worth noting that the Cyclops from Marvel Cosmic Invasion only wears his signature brown jacket, and it would have been cool to see Thing with his classic trench coat and fedora as well.

As a fan, I really think The Thing would be the perfect first Fantastic Four character added to Marvel Cosmic Invasion. He just fits naturally with She-Hulk’s style of play. We don’t know if the rest of the team will show up anytime soon – it would probably take a couple more character packs to get everyone in the game – but I’m already imagining all the cool costumes they could design based on Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, and the Human Torch. It would be awesome!

I’m so excited to share that Marvel Cosmic Invasion is finally here! You can play it now on Nintendo Switch, the new Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox Series X/S. I can’t wait to jump in!
