After almost 20 years of waiting, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is finally launching later this week on Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2. The game was first revealed in 2017, but its development had to start over in 2019. Retro Studios then took over the project, and fans have been eager to see how that change would affect the game. Now, early reviews are starting to come in, giving us a first look at the final result in this beloved video game series.
Reviews for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are now available, and critics have mixed opinions. Some believe the game lives up to the quality of previous Metroid Prime titles, while others consider it the weakest main installment in the series. Currently, the game has a Metacritic score of 80/100, reflecting this divided response.
How Do These Reviews Stack Up to Past Metroid Prime Games?

Although a Metacritic score of 80 is generally good, it’s surprisingly low for the Metroid Prime series. Previous games have received much higher praise: the original Metroid Prime scored an impressive 97/100, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes earned a 92/100, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption achieved a 90/100.
Considering the reviews so far, Metroid Prime 4 appears to be the lowest-rated game in the Metroid Prime series. It’s unclear if this will affect sales or dampen fans’ enthusiasm, but it’s positive that the game isn’t a complete failure, especially given its difficult development process.
I’ve been playing Metroid Prime 4 a lot recently, and I have mixed feelings about it. It definitely feels like a Metroid Prime game, but some of the design choices don’t quite fit with the exploration-focused gameplay of the series. We’ll be posting our full review on ComicBook later this week, so look out for it!
The new game, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, comes out this week on December 4th. You’ll be able to play it on both the Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2.
