Edmund McMillen, known for creating games like Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, has spent the last five years collaborating with Tyler Glaiel on Mewgenics, a challenging turn-based strategy game where each playthrough is different.
The game releases on PC today and has received incredible reviews, earning the highest Metacritic score of any game released this year with a 90.
As a player, I’m hearing everyone say this game is incredibly deep – there are so many ways to play and the number of combos and strategies you can use is just amazing! It sounds like you can really get lost in experimenting with different approaches.
In Mewgenics, you manage a house full of cats, arranging furniture to keep them happy and encourage them to breed successfully. You’ll need to create a comfortable environment to minimize fighting and maximize their chances of having kittens.
Okay, so I basically build a team of four cats, checking out their stats to make the best combo. Then I pick classes for them – like, what role they’ll play – and we head into this dungeon. It’s a turn-based game, meaning we take turns moving and attacking, and honestly, it gets pretty dark and kinda gross, similar to what you see in The Binding of Isaac. Lots of guts and gore!
It sounds strange, but combining life simulation with turn-based strategy and roguelite elements has proven incredibly popular with reviewers. The game boasts a massive amount of content – over 12 character classes, 900 items, 1200 abilities, 15 chapters, and 50 bosses – offering more than 250 hours of gameplay, similar to the depth found in The Binding of Isaac.
Mewgenics has gained recognition from prominent figures in the gaming world, with both Geoff Keighley and Shuhei Yoshida sharing information about the game on X (formerly Twitter).
The team behind Mewgenics has hinted that, like their other games, it will eventually be released on consoles. They’ve also shared more clues and announcements about console versions on social media.
Since Mewgenics is already receiving great reviews, we’re optimistic it will eventually be released on PS5, and it seems likely to happen.
