Microsoft has already significantly reduced its workforce in recent years, but it appears further cuts are planned. CNBC reports the company is now offering eligible employees in the US a voluntary early retirement package. This offer is available to around 7 percent of Microsoft’s US workforce.
A retirement package was announced to employees this week via an internal memo. It’s available to those at the Senior Director level and below who meet a combined age and service requirement of 70 years or more. Eligible employees will receive further details on May 7th.
Following a report earlier this week suggesting potential layoffs at Microsoft’s gaming division, a post on the anonymous platform Blind by an Activision Blizzard employee claims an announcement is expected on either May 6th or June 5th, referenced as “5/6”.
These reports follow the recent changes in Microsoft Gaming leadership, where Asha Sharma took over as CEO after Phil Spencer’s departure.
Following Spencer’s retirement, Sarah Bond, formerly president of Xbox, announced her own departure, stating she was ready to pursue new opportunities both personally and professionally.
In a LinkedIn post, she expressed immense pride in everything the team has accomplished together over the last eight years. She highlighted the rapid growth of PC and cloud gaming, confirmed that development of their next console is progressing well, and emphasized their collective success in building a more accessible gaming platform that connects players on various devices globally.
Back in 2022, when we announced plans to buy Activision Blizzard, I promised to guide Xbox through a period of big changes. We’ve worked through those changes together over the last four years and set the business up for future success. As a team, we overcame some of the most significant hurdles this company has ever faced.
I’ve decided it’s time for me to move forward with the next chapter of my life, both personally and in my career. We’re in a period of rapid technological change that will define the future of our industry, and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead.
The head of the gaming division recently revealed a big change: Microsoft Gaming will now be known as Xbox again. This announcement was made alongside Matt Booty, who leads content for Xbox.
As a huge Xbox fan, I loved hearing this news! Apparently, Microsoft felt the name ‘Microsoft Gaming’ just didn’t capture what they’re really about. So, they’re going back to basics and officially calling themselves Xbox again! They said they want to be known as a place where crazy, awesome ideas are encouraged, and they’re not trying to make everything the same – they want to bring all their different studios and projects together to create something truly amazing. It feels like a return to their roots and a really exciting direction for the future!
The rebranding was completed when Xbox revealed its new logo, which features the original console’s classic black and green colors.
