The new movie Masters of the Universe didn’t perform as well as expected in theaters this weekend, even with added screenings in IMAX. While initial estimates predicted between $25 and $35 million in domestic earnings – and some hoped for more if people liked it – the film only made $11.7 million on its opening Friday. This included earnings from early Wednesday and Thursday showings. Current projections suggest it might even earn less overall than a movie that’s been out for a month.
Early numbers suggest “Masters of the Universe” may not even reach $25 million at the box office, though Deadline estimates it could potentially reach $30.1 million – still a lackluster result. Meanwhile, Obsession continues to perform well, even after being in theaters for four weeks.
Is Masters of the Universe Dead at the Box Office?

Currently, Scary Movie is expected to be a huge box office success, potentially earning around $56 million. Masters of the Universe might reach $30.1 million, according to Deadline, and special screenings of Amazing Digital Circus are predicted to bring in $22 million this weekend. Backrooms and Obsession are also proving popular among horror fans this year. Despite initial reports that Masters of the Universe didn’t perform well, the strong competition from other films likely played a significant role, perhaps even exceeding industry expectations.
Despite a disappointing opening weekend, Masters of the Universe isn’t necessarily a failure. While it may have trouble earning back its $170-$200 million budget, the film could still gain traction as the summer movie season progresses. It received a B from audiences (CinemaScore) and a strong 96% approval rating from families with young children. Although critics gave it a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences are enjoying it, giving it an 87% score, and seem to be finding it a fun, action-packed summer movie.
With The Amazing Digital Circus now available online and poor reviews for Scary Movie, Masters of the Universe may only compete with the older horror films Backrooms and Obsession for the next week. Unfortunately, Disclosure Day comes out next weekend, followed by Toy Story 5, meaning this week is Masters of the Universe’s best opportunity to earn at the box office before it’s overshadowed.
