Fans of classic arcade basketball games like NBA Street and NBA Jam have something to look forward to: a brand new game is coming in 2026! While realistic NBA games are released regularly, many players have been hoping for a return to the over-the-top, fun style of those older titles. A new studio, made up of developers who previously worked at EA and EA Sports, is now working on a game aiming to recapture that magic.
NBA The Run, developed by Play by Play Studios, is a new 3-on-3 street basketball game. You can play by yourself or with friends in this fast-paced game focused on impressive dunks and skillful moves. It’s officially licensed by the NBA, so you’ll be able to play as current stars like Anthony Edwards, Steph Curry, Cooper Flagg, Luka Doncic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Like the classic NBA Street games, The Run will also include fictional players.
You can get a look at the first teaser for NBA The Run right here:
Originally, Play by Play Studios planned to release a game called NBA The Run as The Run: Got Next in 2024. After updates stopped, fans began to speculate about the project. Now, it’s clear the game has been revamped and will officially include the NBA license.
Play by Play Studios CEO Scott Probst said his team understands the high expectations that come with making a basketball video game, given their love for the genre. He expressed excitement about their partnership with the NBA and NBPA, and the potential of their new game, NBA The Run. Despite being a small team, they’re determined and focused on creating a hit that all basketball fans worldwide will enjoy.
Currently, NBA The Run is expected to be released in Spring 2026, though a specific date hasn’t been announced yet. When it launches, it will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and players on all platforms will be able to play together. If you’re interested in trying the game early, you can sign up for playtests on the official website.
