Netflix has canceled the trivia reality show hosted by the former star of How I Met Your Mother. This isn’t the first time the streaming service has canceled a show hosted by this actor; two other unscripted series he hosted were also canceled in recent years.
I recently checked out a show called What’s In the Box, and it was hosted by the incredibly talented Neil Patrick Harris. The premise was pretty cool – eight couples went head-to-head in a quick-fire trivia battle, all for the chance to open these huge, golden boxes. Each box held a potentially amazing prize, and the last couple standing could win over a quarter of a million dollars! It originally aired in December 2025, but sadly, it never really took off on the platform’s most-watched list, which I guess is why it was cancelled. It was a fun concept, though!
Unscripted Series Are Constantly Fighting For Their Lives on Netflix
Netflix is a tough platform for unscripted shows. A show either quickly becomes a huge hit, or it’s canceled almost immediately. It doesn’t matter if it’s a competition, a reality show, or even a home improvement series—nothing is safe unless it becomes incredibly popular, like Squid Game: The Challenge. While generating excitement and attracting viewers is crucial for any streaming service, Netflix has a reputation for ending shows—both scripted and unscripted—before they have a chance to build an audience.
From the start, viewers questioned whether What’s In the Box was fair, with many claiming the show was rigged. Almost immediately after it premiered, people online pointed out suspicious patterns, like the unlucky ‘lose control’ cards appearing one after another during a crucial prize round. One viewer said it felt incredibly coincidental, and was especially frustrating when the team with the most correct answers was eliminated. Another viewer believed the show’s ‘board’ – which is just a visual element – was easily manipulated by producers to unfairly impact the outcome.
