Netflix’s Breakout Hit Crime Drama Series Has Officially Been Canceled (But There’s Some Good News)

Netflix has a reputation for unexpectedly ending its original shows, even when they’re doing well. Today, they’ve announced the cancellation of a very popular series at the height of its success. While it’s disappointing for fans, there is at least one piece of good news to soften the blow.

As a longtime fan of crime dramas, I’ve been following Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer since it debuted in 2022. For those unfamiliar, it’s based on the popular book series by Michael Connelly – the same source material that gave us the excellent 2011 film with Matthew McConaughey. Over four seasons, the show has really built a loyal fanbase, but unfortunately, it looks like we only have one season left to enjoy. It’s a bit of a blow for those of us who’ve been hooked!

Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer to End With Season 5

The legal drama The Lincoln Lawyer will conclude after its fifth season. Creators Ted Humphrey and Dilyn Rodriguez announced the decision, saying they were glad to have some control over how the story finished: “All good things must come to an end, but thankfully sometimes how they come to an end is up to us.”

The statement explained that the goal from the start was to both tell the story of Mickey Haller and his colleagues, and to give it a satisfying ending. While it’s sad to see it finish, it’s also a great chance to wrap up the story and potentially explore what happens next with some of the characters.

We’re incredibly thankful to Netflix and A+E Studios for giving us the chance to finish the series properly. Most importantly, we appreciate all the fans worldwide who have watched and supported the show. We’re working on a final season now that will give Mickey Haller the strong ending he deserves, and we’re excited to share it with you soon!

What Will The Lincoln Lawyer‘s Final Season Be About?

In Season 4 of The Lincoln Lawyer, attorney Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) was wrongly accused of murder and spent time in jail. Although he proved his innocence, he made enemies with some influential and dangerous individuals. The season ended with a surprising encounter: a woman (Cobie Smulders) approached Haller, claiming to be his sister.

Viewers are guessing that The Lincoln Lawyer might be working around legal problems that would prevent bringing Mickey Haller’s half-brother, Harry Bosch, into the show. Bosch already had his own series on Amazon Prime Video, running from 2014 to 2021 with Titus Welliver in the lead role. Because Amazon still owns the rights to the character, a crossover with Netflix – like the one in Michael Connelly’s novels – isn’t possible. Many believe that Morena Baccarin’s character, “Allison,” is being introduced as a replacement for Bosch.

Humphrey explained to TV Line that while they aren’t actually bringing in the ‘Bosch’ character – that show is on a different network – the new series shares some similarities. He described it as a way to expand the show’s universe, particularly Mickey’s family, and introduce a strong, independent new character.

Several books in Michael Connelly’s series have paired Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch, but recent changes to the story make it hard to say which one will inspire Season 5 of the TV show. Season 4 was based on the sixth book, The Law of Innocence. The seventh book, Resurrection Walk, heavily featured Bosch and showed Mickey and Bosch starting to take on cases where they believe the client is innocent, even if the odds are stacked against them. This leads them to a case involving a woman accused of murdering her husband, a sheriff’s deputy. As they investigate, Mickey and Bosch realize their jobs – lawyer and investigator – are becoming increasingly dangerous due to suspicious activity within the department.

You can now watch The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays the lead role of Mickey Haller, a character previously portrayed by Matthew McConaughey in the 2011 movie. The series also features a strong cast including Neve Campbell (known from Scream), Becki Newton (Ugly Betty), Jazz Raycole (My Wife and Kids), Angus Sampson (Insidious), and Emmanuelle Chriqui (Superman & Lois). Jason O’Mara (Fire Country), Javon Johnson (The Oval), and Cobie Smulders (from Marvel’s The Avengers) also appear in Season 4.
