New Masters of the Universe Footage Reveals Best Look at a Beloved Franchise Staple

The world first met Prince Adam and the fantastical world of Eternia in 1982 with Mattel’s Masters of the Universe. The popular toy line quickly led to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, an animated series that ran for 130 episodes from 1983 to 1985. A live-action movie starring Dolph Lundgren came out in 1987, but while it gained a dedicated fanbase, it didn’t quite capture the grand, imaginative feel of the original. Now, after almost forty years, Amazon MGM Studios is bringing Eternia back to the big screen with a new, large-scale adaptation directed by Travis Knight. This version aims to celebrate everything fans love about the franchise—its unique mythology and its memorable, quirky characters.

I just saw a new clip from the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie, and as a longtime fan, I was really excited! It seems like a key moment from the lore is being brought to life. Basically, Skeletor’s attacking a ship with Prince Adam and his friends, and Teela tells Adam to head for the hangar. That’s where he finds the Sky Sled – a vehicle I remember so fondly from the original toys back in ’82! The clip shows Adam getting the hang of flying it, and ends with him launching off the ship, ready to take on Skeletor’s forces. It’s awesome to see them include this – the Sky Sled was such a cool part of the cartoon, and it’s clear the filmmakers are really leaning into the classic Masters of the Universe imagery, which is exactly what I wanted to see.

The Sky Sled Is Not the Only Cartoon-Accurate Element in Masters of the Universe

As a longtime fan, it’s awesome to see the Sky Sled finally make it onto the big screen! But what really impresses me about this new Masters of the Universe movie is how committed they are to the toys. Remember how the 1987 film left out Trap Jaw and used Karg instead? Well, he’s back now, played by Sam C. Wilson, and they nailed his look – mechanical jaw, bionic arm, the whole deal. They didn’t stop there, though. Tri-Klops still has that cool rotating three-eyed visor, and they even dug deep and included Goat Man! He was one of those later-wave figures you had to hunt for as a kid. And Jared Leto’s Skeletor? He perfectly captures that over-the-top, knowingly evil vibe that made the character so iconic, even if you weren’t into He-Man as a kid. It’s a real treat for fans like me.

The good guys are just as well-developed. Ram-Man (Jon Xue Zhang), a classic character from the original cartoon known for his spring-loaded attacks, appears alongside Fisto (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson), a fan favorite who finally gets his moment in the spotlight. We’ll also see the Sorceress (Morena Baccarin) transform into her falcon form, Zoar. The filmmakers have paid close attention to detail, even including subtle nods to the original series, like Adam wearing a pink shirt during his time on Earth – a reference to his pastel-colored outfit in the cartoon. And the transformation from Prince Adam into He-Man perfectly captures the spirit of the original, complete with the iconic “I HAVE THE POWER!” shout and a quick glimpse of the spirit of Greyskull.

Masters of the Universe is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 5, 2026.
