Nintendo Switch Online Just Added 5 New Classic Games (And You’ve Probably Never Played 3 Of Them)

Nintendo recently surprised many by reviving the Virtual Boy, a gaming system that didn’t sell well when it originally launched in 1995. Now, through the Nintendo Switch Online service, players can experience classic Virtual Boy games using a special accessory. Since its release, Nintendo has added a growing number of these retro titles, and on May 13th, five more were added, including three games never before available outside of Japan.

To play the new retro games added to Nintendo Switch Online, you’ll need an Expansion Pack subscription. Plus, you’ll need a Virtual Boy accessory that connects to your Switch. You can choose between a simple cardboard version or a more detailed remake of the original. If you have (or are planning to get) a Virtual Boy, here are the five new games available to Nintendo Switch Online members starting today.

5 More Virtual Boy Games Join the Nintendo Switch Online Classics Library

Nintendo added five new games for its Virtual Boy system to the Nintendo Switch Online library on May 13th. While some are lesser-known titles, the collection also includes popular games like Space Invaders. US gamers have an extra reason to be thrilled – three of these games were never released outside of Japan, meaning players in the West can now try them for the very first time. Here’s the complete list of games now available to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers:

  • V-Tetris (1995) – A Virtual Boy version of the classic Tetris, which was never released outside of Japan.
  • Jack Bros. (1995) – An action game with a Halloween theme, full of puzzles and battles as players navigate dungeons full of enemies.
  • Space Invaders Virtual Collection (1995) – A Virtual Boy version of the arcade classic hit, originally available only in Japan.
  • Virtual Bowling (1995) – As its title suggests, an immersive 3D bowling game that also happens to be our third title formerly available only in Japan
  • Vertical Force (1995) – A flight simulator battle game where players duke it out with AI Drones.

You can see gameplay footage of each game in the trailer Nintendo of America posted below.

Five new games have been added to the Virtual Boy collection available through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, bringing the total to 15 titles. Considering only 22 games were ever made for the original Virtual Boy, the Nintendo Switch Online library now includes almost the entire catalog. At the current pace, we can expect the full lineup to be available soon. While these games are a bit obscure compared to other classic Nintendo titles, they offer a unique look at gaming history and are worth exploring for retro game enthusiasts.

Nintendo launched a set of new profile icons inspired by the Virtual Boy alongside its latest games. You can buy them using Nintendo Switch Online points in the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 menu.
