One of Square Enix’s Oldest Games Is Still Getting Updates 20+ Years Later

With so many classic games being updated or re-released, it’s no surprise that Square Enix is revisiting some of their older Final Fantasy titles with new bundles and deals. But one particularly old game is getting an unexpected gameplay update this year – even after 24 years! While it might not completely modernize the game, dedicated fans who have enjoyed it for almost two decades will likely be thrilled to see this continued support.

It’s common for big-budget games like Final Fantasy to have long gaps between releases, but this can make people forget how much history the series has. While the franchise may not be attracting as many new younger players, re-releasing older games on modern consoles is letting a whole new generation experience them. This strategy has worked incredibly well for Square Enix, especially with the popularity of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, which have appealed to both longtime fans and newcomers.

Final Fantasy XI Is Getting Improvements & System Changes Even 24 Years After Its Launch

Square Enix, after briefly considering shutting down servers earlier this year, now seems to be acknowledging the continued popularity of Final Fantasy 11. This older MMORPG, which came before the very successful Final Fantasy 14, still has a loyal player base, even though it can be challenging to play. The game’s enduring support has apparently impressed Square Enix, leading to an unexpected update that could add more content for its players.

As a long-time Final Fantasy fan, I’ve always thought Final Fantasy XI was something special. It really showed Square Enix what was possible with post-launch support, even years after release! I was watching the 24th anniversary stream (PC Gamer covered some of the translations) and the director, Yoji Fujito, basically said the game’s continued success has made them rethink their plans again. He also mentioned the whole FFXI team is going to be focusing on strengthening the game even further, which is awesome news for us MMO players!

Recent reports suggest that the game is getting a revamp of its progression system. This means free trials that previously allowed players to quickly reach Level 75 with new characters will likely be removed. While trial accounts may still have some limitations, players will be able to permanently stay at Level 75 in certain starting areas of Final Fantasy 11. The game’s anniversary could also bring other much-needed improvements, like new character customization options or helpful shortcuts in the game’s interface, to revitalize the experience.

Even More Content May Continue FF11’s Lifespan When It Reaches Its 30th Anniversary

Fujito has shared that the team working on Final Fantasy 11 aims to support the game until its 30th anniversary, around the year 2032. This is remarkable, particularly since Square Enix is still actively developing content for Final Fantasy 14, including updates, events, and the Evercold expansion planned for 2027. While FF11 likely won’t receive massive overhauls, it’s impressive to see the developers continuing to support such a long-running game as if it were brand new.

While new story content and expansions are unlikely for Final Fantasy XI, future updates could significantly improve the game’s future, saving it from the potential closure it faced a couple of years ago. Square Enix has already revamped the game’s website, making information much easier to access. They’re also considering further improvements to how the game looks and feels, possibly even simplifying the initial download process by addressing issues with the PlayOnline installer.

Similar to how updates improve Final Fantasy 14, Final Fantasy 11 might get some tweaks to make it more accessible to new players. There’s even a possibility it could be re-released on current consoles like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Steam. However, given the game’s age, these changes might be limited to smaller adjustments over the next few years.

Even a small update will be welcome news for dedicated fans who have played for years, giving the game a fresh start. While Square Enix generally discourages private servers, these improvements suggest they’re finding ways to support the game and give players better ways to enjoy this beloved title. For longtime Final Fantasy 11 players, this continued support is a dream come true and shows what passionate communities can achieve.
