One Year Later, DC Officially Makes Superman’s Justice Gang Canon

Fans who enjoyed the Superman reboot and the team introduced within it will be pleased to hear that the group is now officially part of DC Comics’ established storyline. For those unfamiliar, the film features an early version of the Justice League, playfully called the Justice Gang (though not all members like the name!). This team—assembled by Maxwell Lord—includes Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and later, Metamorpho. While I personally enjoyed the group and its connection to Justice League International, it was surprising because there’s no equivalent ‘Justice Gang’ in the original comics.

Things are really different in the DC Universe now. After the events of DC K.O., everything’s been shaken up for all the heroes and villains. Superman passed on this powerful Alpha Energy to the fighters in the Omega Tournament, and it’s given everyone these… visions, guiding them on how to prepare for Darkseid’s next move. Honestly, it feels like a complete overhaul since DC K.O. ended, with everyone scrambling to get ready for what’s coming. I’m particularly intrigued by what Guy Gardner is up to – he’s putting together a team for something big, and it sounds important.

Guy Gardner is Heading into Space with the Justice Gang

In Justice League Unlimited #18, written by Mark Waid with art by Clayton Henry, Tamra Bonvillain, and Ariana Maher, the League’s leaders announce a controversial new plan: allowing reformed villains to join the team. This initiative, intended as a rehabilitation program, immediately causes friction among the less experienced heroes. Meanwhile, Blue Beetle is trying to find Guy Gardner to learn about the vision Gardner received during the Omega Tournament.

Blue Beetle jokes about Guy Gardner imagining himself as the leader of the Green Lanterns – and it turns out he’s right! Then, Guy prepares for a space journey to deliver the Power Bank, a device that can restore lost superpowers, to the Green Lanterns on Oa for safekeeping. He won’t be going alone, though; Mister Terrific and Hawkgirl join him on the ship, along with Metamorpho, to help the impulsive Green Lantern with the important task.

Initially, just seeing Guy Gardner team up with certain heroes in space wasn’t enough to confirm the ‘Justice Gang’ as official DC Comics canon. However, the recent July solicitations provided further proof. This storyline involving Guy, Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Metamorpho will continue for several issues, and the description for Justice League Unlimited #21 explicitly states that “Guy Gardner has messed up – and now his Justice Gang is caught in the middle of a war…”. Therefore, it’s now confirmed that the Justice Gang is officially part of DC Universe canon.

Synergy Doesn’t Have to Be a Scary Thing

Honestly, I’m usually pretty wary when comic books start heavily tying into movies or TV shows. It’s been a bigger issue with Marvel in the past, though DC has done it sometimes too. I understand why they do it – trying to get new readers who loved the film or show – but it often feels like they’re focusing on those new fans and forgetting about the people who read the comics every month, and that bothers me.

However, I’m not too concerned about this. It doesn’t seem like DC will have Guy Gardner create a competing superhero team to the Justice League, although that would be interesting to see. This ‘Justice Gang’ storyline will likely only last for five or six issues – enough for a collected edition. It would be a bigger issue if the Justice Gang took over Justice League Unlimited entirely, but it’s just one story within a series that features a huge number of heroes.

Synergy can sometimes fall flat, but I think Justice League Unlimited is handling team-ups well. It feels like these heroes are coming together for a specific adventure and will likely return to their individual paths afterward. As Guy Gardner forms his new team, it’s best to see what DC does with this group. At the very least, we can expect some entertaining antics involving Green Lantern.
