One Year Later, DOOM: The Dark Ages DLC Is Nowhere to Be Seen

It’s been a year since DOOM: The Dark Ages came out, but some PlayStation 5 players are still missing content they purchased when the game first launched.

I was so hyped when I bought the Premium Edition of the PS5 game, because it promised extra campaign content! It’s been a whole year now, and we still haven’t seen anything about that DLC – id Software hasn’t even really shown it off yet. It’s a little frustrating, to be honest.

The game is currently on sale for 67% off, costing just £32.99 / $34.99 in the PS Store’s Next Level Savings Sale. However, fans who purchased the Premium Edition when it first launched paid an additional £30 / $30.

Although the more expensive version included perks like early access, a skin pack, a digital artbook, and a soundtrack, the biggest promised feature hasn’t been released yet. Customers paid a premium price for content that is now being offered for sale even though it isn’t available.

The upcoming expansion is a hot topic on the game’s Reddit forum, with players discussing the lengthy development time and what the DLC will offer. One user, Significant-Sundae89, expressed the frustration many feel, noting that after a year, all that’s been released are a few small maps, and the constant updates about ‘polishing’ are wearing thin. They pointed out that modern games are expensive, so fans are understandably getting impatient.

Sneakyjaycool argues we shouldn’t be upset with the developers for sharing updates on their progress. They point out that we aren’t owed anything, and that it’s better for the downloadable content to be released when it’s polished and enjoyable, rather than being rushed out in a broken state.

That quote highlights how people often feel about expansions released after a game comes out. If an expansion is released quickly, some think it should have been included in the original game. But if it takes a long time to come out, like with this DLC for DOOM: The Dark Ages – since it was clearly made after the game launched – fans end up waiting a considerable amount of time to play it.

The developer has confirmed the upcoming DLC is going to be substantial. Game director Hugo Martin described it back in February as being “basically like a sequel,” and emphasized that it’s a very large addition to the game. He assured players that while they’ve been waiting, the DLC is truly massive.
