Peter Jackson denied having a not-so-lovely reason for firing Ryan Gosling.
Peter Jackson, the director of The Lord of the Rings, recently explained why Ryan Gosling didn’t get the role of the heartbroken father in his 2009 film, The Lovely Bones. The part eventually went to Mark Wahlberg, who appeared in the movie with Saoirse Ronan and Rachel Weisz.
Ryan, 45, had said he lost his role in the thriller because he gained 60 pounds, but Peter offered a more detailed explanation of why the decision was made.
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival on May 13, the 64-year-old explained to journalist Didier Allouch, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, that he avoids discussing specific instances of actors being replaced. He clarified that it’s a private matter and not the actor’s fault. Instead, he believes recasting happens because the initial casting choice wasn’t right – the production team made the mistake by choosing someone unsuitable for the role, not because of any failing on the actor’s part.
He added, “I won’t discuss specific people, but it’s important to understand that things haven’t unfolded as we expected. We made a mistake, and we fully accept responsibility for that.”
While Ryan initially received most of the responsibility for the failed connection, Peter now believes the problem was simply a lack of compatibility between the two people involved.
As many know, Ryan is a truly talented actor,” said the director of King Kong. “Making a film relies on strong connections between everyone involved, both in front of and behind the camera. It’s about how the actor communicates with the audience and how well everyone works together – a complex mix of collaboration, storytelling, and becoming a character.”
He explained that filmmaking is a complex process where a lot of effort goes into planning and casting, and getting the right chemistry between actors. However, sometimes mistakes happen despite everyone’s best intentions.

Ryan shared that he and the director disagreed about the character. He said he intentionally gained weight for the role – indulging in lots of Haagen-Dazs ice cream – because he felt the father character needed to be physically bigger.
The actor, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2010, explained they had envisioned the character looking quite different. He specifically thought the character should weigh 210 pounds.
It wasn’t simply the change in how things looked; the Project Hail Mary star realized the difference in their viewpoints hinted at a more significant problem.
He explained that a lack of communication before filming was the main issue. Because the movie was so large and complex, he wasn’t able to connect with each actor personally. As a result, when I arrived on set, I realized I had misunderstood something crucial.

Oh my gosh, you won’t believe this! I just found out Miles Teller auditioned for Friday Night Lights! Like, he tried out for several roles, and get this – he even went for the part Taylor Kitsch ultimately got! Can you imagine Miles as Tim Riggins?! It’s blowing my mind!

The Star Trek actor lost out on the role, which ultimately went to Ben McKenzie, due to his bad acne.
I remember hearing him talk about his skin struggles on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast back in May 2024, and it really resonated with me. He explained that he dealt with terrible skin as a teenager, and unfortunately, it flared up all over again after he finished college.

In a 2021 interview, the actor from American Pie shared that turning down a particular role is one of his biggest regrets. He explained that at the time, he was questioning whether he wanted to start doing television work and wasn’t sure he was ready for that career path. He admits now that thinking seems a bit arrogant, but that was how he felt then.

Casting director David Rapaport revealed to EW that he initially wanted Alden Ehrenreich for the role of Dan, before Penn Badgley was cast. However, producers felt Ehrenreich, who is 5’9″, wasn’t tall enough to be considered a good match for Blake Lively’s character. Ultimately, the role went to Penn Badgley, who is roughly the same height as Ehrenreich, according to online sources.

In his 2014 memoir and again on Marc Maron’s podcast, actor Rob Lowe shared that he declined the role that eventually went to Patrick Dempsey on Grey’s Anatomy. He jokingly estimated the decision cost him around $70 million, but added, “It’s just money.” Lowe explained that he saw the pilot and when the character was nicknamed ‘McDreamy,’ he knew it wasn’t a good fit for him.

Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his roles in Sherlock and as Doctor Strange, once tried out for the part of vampire Bill Compton. Ultimately, the role went to Stephen Moyer.

Before becoming an Oscar nominee, Jessica Chastain auditioned for the role of Sookie Stackhouse, but Anna Paquin ultimately landed the part.

When she was 17, Jennifer Lawrence auditioned for the role of Crystal Norris, a werepanther, and was a strong contender. However, because of her age, the role ultimately went to Lindsay Pulsipher.

Tiffani Thiessen, known for her roles on Saved By the Bell and Beverly Hills, 90210, revealed she tried out for the part of Rachel on Friends. However, producers felt she was too young for the role.

Katherine Langford, known for her role in 13 Reasons Why, actually auditioned for the part of Betty Cooper on Riverdale. Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica on the show, revealed this, explaining that she and another actor were getting falafel with someone who was trying out for the role of Archie when they found out.

As a longtime observer of casting choices, I was fascinated to learn who almost played Jen Lindley on Dawson’s Creek! Apparently, Katherine Heigl – yes, the Katherine Heigl of Grey’s Anatomy fame – was a very strong contender. The pilot director, Steve Miner, really championed her, having worked with her previously on his film My Father the Hero. Creator Kevin Williamson told Entertainment Weekly that Heigl actually seemed a bit older and more mature for her age, and her audition was incredibly impressive. They were all genuinely wowed by her performance – it’s amazing to think how close we were to a very different Jen!

Katie Holmes became a star thanks to her role as Joey Potter, Dawson Leery’s friend and love interest, but she almost didn’t get the part. According to the show’s creator, Kevin Williamson, Selma Blair was originally cast in the role. However, Williamson told Entertainment Weekly that a last-minute audition tape from Katie Holmes changed everything. He said receiving the tape – filmed in the basement of her family’s home in Toledo, Ohio – was a turning point for him and the show.

Actress Jennifer Edelstein came very close to landing the famous role of Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City. She even had a signed contract, but she was always second choice to Sarah Jessica Parker. According to Edelstein, everything hinged on Parker’s decision. She was ready to go, but ultimately had to wait for Parker to decline. It’s hard to picture anyone but Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie, but Edelstein’s story makes perfect sense.

Originally, The CW considered Ashley Olsen for the role of the lead character on the show, but casting director David Rapaport was determined to get Blake Lively. He told Buzzfeed he was worried they wouldn’t be able to cast her, or that she wouldn’t be interested, because he believed the show’s success depended on her and he didn’t have a backup plan.

The CW initially wanted Rumer Willis, who would later win Dancing With the Stars, to star in Gossip Girl. However, casting director Rapaport felt she wasn’t the right fit for the role and eventually cast her on 90210 instead. He told Buzzfeed he liked Rumer and thought she’d become a great actress, but he believed the show needed relatively unknown leads who truly embodied the spirit of the series – and who ultimately made it a success for six seasons.

Before Keke Palmer landed her role on Fox’s comedy-horror series Scream Queens, she was a contender to play Iris West in The Flash. Ultimately, the part went to Candice Patton. Casting director David Rapaport explained to Buzzfeed that while they liked Candice early on, they weren’t quite ready to make a decision. They then tested Keke Palmer and another actress, but both seemed too young alongside Grant Gustin. When Candice returned for a second look, Rapaport said there was an instant connection.

Iwan Rheon recently shared with The Telegraph that he was a finalist for the role of Jon Snow when Game of Thrones was first casting. Ultimately, Rheon ended up playing Ramsay Snow – a character many viewers came to despise – while Kit Harington became beloved as Jon Snow. It’s hard to picture things any other way!

Josh Schwartz, who worked with Chris Pratt on the last season of The O.C., shared that Pratt was originally his top pick for the role of ‘Chuck,’ but things didn’t work out. Ultimately, Zachary Levi landed the part. Schwartz explained that Pratt’s career path led him to Guardians of the Galaxy instead, and added that he’s happy for Pratt’s success.

Katie Holmes, known for her role in Dawson’s Creek, met with Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan early on as the show was being developed, Kohan shared. While Holmes was a fan of the series, Kohan told TopMob News that she had other commitments at the time, and it wasn’t yet clear what Orange Is the New Black would become.

Cobie Smulders revealed that she originally auditioned for the role of Kate Austen on Lost but ultimately became known for playing Robin Scherbatsky on How I Met Your Mother. This means two popular TV shows could have had very different casts!
Cobie Smulders shared in a 2014 interview with TopMob News that both she and Evangeline Lilly auditioned for the show Lost. Smulders jokingly said she did so poorly in her audition that it actually helped Lilly land the role, who reportedly thanked her for it.

While most people think of Julianna Margulies as the star of The Good Wife, she wasn’t the first choice for the role. The Emmy-winning actress recently shared that the studio initially considered Ashley Judd and Helen Hunt for the part.

It’s difficult to picture anyone other than Sarah Michelle Gellar as the vampire slayer in Sunnydale, but Katie Holmes was originally offered the lead role in the WB series. She decided to focus on attending high school instead, paving the way for Gellar to be cast.

Edie Falco ultimately landed the role, but it was first offered to Lorraine Bracco. Bracco, an Academy Award nominee, turned it down because she’d already played a similar character in Goodfellas and was looking for a new challenge.

Before becoming famous for her role on Empire, Taraji P. Henson shared that she actually auditioned for the part of Olivia Pope on Scandal. She admitted that when she went to read for Shonda Rhimes, she felt it was clearly meant for Kerry Washington and wondered why she was even considered. She knew the role belonged to Washington.

Believe it or not, Gillian Anderson—best known as Agent Scully from The X-Files—was offered a part in Downton Abbey! She ultimately decided not to take it, and the role ended up going to Elizabeth McGovern.

I’ve been a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries for years, and honestly, I can’t picture anyone but Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert! But it’s wild to learn that she wasn’t their initial pick. Apparently, the network had someone else in mind first. It was only after the producers re-watched Nina’s audition tape that they realized she was the perfect fit – that’s when they decided to cast this incredibly talented Bulgarian actress!

The famous singer was offered the main part in a show starring Bill Cosby, but she decided to focus on her music instead.

As a huge fan of Sex and the City, it’s wild to think things could have been so different! Apparently, Dana Delany was originally offered the role of Carrie Bradshaw. She actually turned it down, and the reason is fascinating. She’d already starred in a few projects with mature themes – things like Nude Girls and Exit to Eden – and didn’t want to do another show that prominently featured “sex” in the title. Can you imagine anyone else as Carrie now? It just proves how perfectly Sarah Jessica Parker embodies the character!

Jerry Seinfeld offered Paul Shaffer, David Letterman’s longtime bandleader, a job on his show without even asking for an audition. However, Shaffer never responded to the offer.

Oh my gosh, can you believe it? Apparently, AMC really wanted Jon Hamm to play Don Draper, but he turned it down! He said in an interview that he didn’t even want to be on television at the time! It’s just… mind-blowing! And the irony? He ended up starring in Hung on HBO! Seriously, the universe works in mysterious ways, and Jon Hamm is a gift!
