A brand new game in a beloved RPG series – one that originally launched on the PlayStation 1 – is coming out this summer. The PS1 is widely considered to have the best collection of role-playing games ever, with classics like Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Wild Arms, The Legend of Dragoon, Revelations: Persona, and Suikoden 2 all released on the console. While this new game might not be as well-known as those titles, longtime fans of the original PlayStation will definitely recognize the series.
Happinet announced this week that Brigandine: Abyss will be released this summer. The original Brigandine first appeared on the PlayStation in 1998 and became a beloved, classic strategy RPG, often compared to the Fire Emblem series. An expanded version, Brigandine: Grand Edition, followed in 2000, but the series then paused for twenty years. In 2020, the long-awaited sequel, Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia, revived the franchise.
Following the release of The Legend of Runersia six years ago, Brigandine: Abyss will continue the series’ story. Originally announced in early 2026, Abyss is scheduled to launch on August 27th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The game will feature the series’ signature turn-based strategy gameplay and a large cast of characters spread across six unique campaigns.
Brigandine: Abyss is the latest installment in the long-running Brigandine series. The game takes place in a brand new world, making it accessible to both newcomers and series veterans. Centuries after the original Abyssloa Empire was defeated by magical Brigandine armor, a new empire has emerged, intent on world domination. Players will gather resources, command monsters, and choose from six unique campaigns to oppose this rising threat.
If Brigandine: Abyss does well, we might see more games in the series down the line. Even if it doesn’t lead to another installment, it’s great that Happinet is still supporting this franchise for longtime PlayStation fans who enjoyed the earlier games.
