PS5 Consoles Hit With Another Price Increase From Sony

Surprisingly, Sony is raising the price of PS5 consoles again, even for used models. Earlier this month, they already increased prices for all new PS5s and the PlayStation Portal. Now, the base digital-only PS5 costs at least $600, and the PS5 Pro is selling for $900. Many thought the first increase would be the last, but Sony has now extended the price hike to include pre-owned consoles as well.

People on ResetEra noticed that Sony has increased the price of refurbished PlayStation 5 consoles sold on its PlayStation Direct website. These consoles were previously owned and returned to Sony, but are tested to ensure they function like new and come with a one-year warranty.

Even though they’re used, Sony has increased the price of refurbished PlayStation 5 consoles by $100. Now, the standard PS5 costs $549 and the digital edition is $499. While still $100 less expensive than a new console, this price increase is frustrating, particularly for budget-conscious buyers.

Good news for PlayStation fans: you can still find the original PS5 model selling closer to its original price, but only as a refurbished unit. While the newer, slimmer PS5 launched in 2023, Sony continues to offer the original, larger console refurbished for $399. These won’t last forever, though – once they’re gone, it’s unlikely Sony will have more available.

It doesn’t look like the price of the PS5 will be going down anytime soon. Although a price cut might happen when the PS6 is released—currently expected in 2027—Sony appears happy with selling the PS5 at its current, higher price, even if it means they sell fewer consoles overall.
