PS5 Live Service Fairgames Reportedly Roasted in Recent Pre-Alpha

It’s unclear if Haven Studios can overcome the negative reaction to Fairgames, which began when the game was first shown in 2023.

The game received an even poorer response than Concord, which quickly launched and then disappeared just weeks later. Despite this, the project continues to move forward.

The Canadian game studio recently let a small group of players test a very early version of their free-to-play shooter, ‘Espresso’. These players were required to keep details of the game confidential under a non-disclosure agreement.

As expected, details are starting to leak from those who’ve gotten their hands on it, and Tom Henderson over at Insider Gaming – who’s always spot-on with these things – has the latest news.

He says he’s seen the game in action and screenshots from its Discord server, which was used to gather player feedback and opinions.

Feedback has been largely negative, with many players criticizing things like how the characters move, the way classes work, and other core elements of the game.

Henderson notes that the game’s visuals have shifted since the first trailer. It now looks more realistic and subdued, with a style similar to games like Call of Duty or The Division.

The game is still planned as an extraction shooter: players will attempt to infiltrate a vault, grab the money, and escape, but they’ll be able to respawn if eliminated.

The game splits players into four teams of three, and it appears the main goal is to collect valuable items.

Honestly, it’s unclear how this connects to the idea of a ‘Robin Hood’ dynamic, or why these groups would fight amongst themselves if they supposedly share the same objectives.

It’s important to remember that the main purpose of tests like these is to gather feedback, so criticism isn’t necessarily negative – it’s helpful if the team pays attention. The goal of this early test is to make the overall experience better.

However, Henderson points out that multiple sources found the game unengaging. That’s hardly a strong recommendation, is it?

Sony’s plan to continually update games with new content is already being closely watched, so Fairgames really needs to impress. This is especially true since the first trailer didn’t get a good reaction.

We’re concerned about the potential for studio closures and job losses, and unfortunately, we don’t believe this project can succeed.

The platform holder, at least so far, appears to disagree.
