The androids, Mother and Father, are a refreshing departure from typical sci-fi robots; instead of being weapons or tools, they’re focused on nurturing and rebuilding humanity. This makes the series particularly memorable and sets it apart from others in the genre.

It’s best to go into Raised by Wolves knowing as little as possible, but essentially, the show is a compelling exploration of the conflict between science and religion. This tension is embodied by the Mithraic, a group dedicated to the god Sol (and named after Mithras). They believe in eliminating anyone who doesn’t share their faith, leading to a devastating religious war that nearly destroys humankind.

The Atheists are a group who don’t believe in any god. They rely on science and are guided by a powerful quantum computer called the Trust. This computer was created by Campion Sturges (played by Cosmo Jarvis), the same person who created the entities known as Mother and Father. The Atheists believe the Trust is the perfect leader because it’s unbiased, honest, and makes decisions based on logic, not feelings.

Scott’s distinctive style – a fascination with the bizarre and disturbing – is evident throughout the series. Raised by Wolves blends complex science fiction with thought-provoking questions about belief and how life evolves, drawing inspiration from films like Alien and Blade Runner. It also includes unsettling imagery that challenges traditional ideas about creation. This show is a classic Ridley Scott production with an interesting twist, making it a must-watch for his fans and anyone who enjoys strange and imaginative science fiction.

Raised by Wolves’s Cancelation Signaled a Disappointing Sci-Fi Streaming Trend

Even though many considered it one of the most creative science fiction shows of recent years, HBO Max canceled Ridley Scott’s series in June 2022 after just two seasons. The cancellation came as a surprise to viewers, who were left with an unresolved ending after the season two finale, titled “Happiness.”

Fans were especially disappointed because the show had been hinting at major answers about the planet, what the future held for humans, and the androids’ true roles. Sadly, it now seems those questions will likely remain unanswered.

But it’s frustrating because after the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger, HBO Max pulled it, and now it’s become incredibly hard to watch. It briefly showed up on free streaming services like Roku and Tubi, which was nice, but now it feels almost lost – difficult for both longtime fans to revisit and for new viewers to even find.

Even though it didn’t get a proper ending, Raised by Wolves is still a show worth watching. Beyond its interesting story, it boasts stunning visuals and a bold scope. However, its cancellation highlights how easily streaming shows can disappear, and sadly, this seems to be becoming more and more common.

Despite its brief run, Raised by Wolves is a show well worth watching and deserves all the praise it receives.
