Sarus can be a bit tricky to learn at first, but once you get comfortable with the world of Carcosa, you’ll discover a lot of interesting strategies and systems. This really shines later in the game, when powerful abilities let you create unique character builds and master the game’s movement. Here are 15 advanced tips to help you, starting with…
Dashing in Mid-Air While Shielding
You’ll frequently find yourself needing to block, quickly move, and jump to avoid enemy attacks. A good example is in the Ancient Depths, where enemies fire waves of blue projectiles. You can either jump over yellow bullets to absorb the damage, or risk taking on Corruption, which does have some advantages we’ll discuss later.
Perk Effects and Their Duration
Okay, so weapon perks aren’t just about doing more damage. Some are kinda weird – like, I’ve got one that builds my Power just by shooting! And honestly, a lot of these perks are subtle. It’s easy to not even notice they’re working during a fight. That’s why I always glance at the top left of my screen. There’s a little icon that pops up when a perk activates, and it tells you how long it’ll last. Knowing that helps me time things perfectly and really maximize the benefits.
Attribute Volatility
As you get closer to finishing the game, you’ll find a feature called Attribute Volatility on certain items. This lets you exceed the normal limits of your stats, like increasing your Integrity far beyond its usual maximum. However, there are downsides. For example, if you raise your Integrity past the cap, you won’t be able to see enemy health bars – they’ll appear grey until the enemy is defeated. Be particularly cautious with Drive Volatility, as dying while it’s active will cause you to lose all your Lucenite, with no way to recover it.
Parry Energy and Aiming

Parrying isn’t just about blocking attacks like Nova blasts or red projectiles – it’s a powerful way to attack too. When you successfully parry, energy shoots forward in a straight line, and can even break through an enemy’s red shield. You can control where this energy goes by aiming with your crosshairs, letting you send a parry right back at an enemy who’s attacking. While it doesn’t do massive damage, it’s great for staggering opponents, even tougher Elite enemies.
Overdrive
Your Ultimate ability is incredibly powerful. As you play, it charges up, and when unleashed, it delivers a devastating area attack that can instantly defeat strong enemies and significantly harm others. You’re protected while using it, and any enemies you eliminate with it will drop valuable Aether, giving you a quick advantage when facing multiple opponents. You can further enhance this ability with upgrades – some requiring Halcyon – to boost its damage, expand its range, and even speed up its charge rate based on the damage you inflict.
Turning Corruption into Damage Resistance
Forget what Coldplay says – yellow is actually a dangerous color in Carcosa, particularly when you’re building up Corruption. While taking the upgrade to absorb yellow attacks and power up your weapon seems good, it’s risky. However, if you find an item that boosts your defense based on how much Corruption you have, yellow can become useful for staying alive. Just don’t overdo it – even with high defense, you’ll still lose if your health gets too low.
Shield Upgrades
If you plan to withstand Corruption damage or not, be sure to upgrade your Soltari shield’s Armor Matrix, focusing on upgrades that lower the damage you take. It’s also a good idea to use parries to reduce Corruption, particularly during tougher fights with enemies using multiple colors.
Quick Shield Activation

The Soltari shield is linked to your melee attack button, and you’ll quickly discover you can use it at the very last moment to block incoming attacks. Because it activates so quickly, it’s easy to deflect streams of blue projectiles, fire a powerful shot at an enemy, and then block another stream right away. As the game progresses, the timing for blocking becomes more precise, so practice switching quickly between activating your shield and dealing damage.
Staggers and Executions
Pistols and shotguns might not seem very powerful at first. Pistols run out of ammo quickly and require frequent reloading, and shotguns have limited range, though special incendiary rounds can help. However, both are effective at stunning enemies, and perks like Cover Fire can enhance this. Once you upgrade your melee attack to let you teleport to staggered enemies, you can perform brutal finishing moves. If you also improve your chances of getting Aether, these kills can restore your health.
Weapon Stats Scale to Attributes
Your character’s attributes affect more than just health, defense, and Lucenite gain. They also change how well your weapons perform. When you find a new weapon, you can see how your attributes impact its stats, which is helpful when planning your build. This is especially useful for deciding which Artifacts will give you the biggest boost to things like clip size or damage output.
Weak Points and Turning Off Auto Hit
Auto Hit is helpful if you want to concentrate on avoiding attacks while still dealing steady damage. However, disabling it can be advantageous, depending on the weapon you’re using. Every enemy has a highlighted weak point that takes extra damage from precise hits, and turning off Auto Hit lets you aim for those spots more effectively. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference, but if you’re looking to maximize your damage output, giving it a try is worthwhile.
When to Reduce Lucenite Gain
Carcosan Modifiers let you fine-tune the difficulty of Saros. While increasing damage and reducing damage taken is great, it can be tricky to balance with the cost of upgrade points. If you’re stuck on a particular enemy, consider enabling the reduced Lucenite gain when returning to The Passage. This lowers your rewards per cycle, but the benefit is significant enough to allow you to afford protective upgrades and overcome challenging Trials.
Unlimited Protection Modifiers

Look, if you’re like me and just want to enjoy the story without getting stuck on a tough boss or spending hours tweaking builds, there’s a setting for that! You can turn on ‘Unlimited Protection Modifiers’ in the gameplay settings, and it basically lets you ignore all the usual balance stuff. Yeah, some might call it easy mode, but honestly? If I’m hitting a wall, I’m not afraid to use it just to keep the adventure going. It’s a great option when you just want to experience the game!
Choosing Your Favorite Weapon
When you return to The Passage, whether by dying or teleporting, Arjun will keep the weapon he’s currently using. It won’t have all its upgrades, as that would be unbalanced. However, if you activate the ‘Weapon Symmetry’ setting, you’ll find weapons that are more likely to be similar to your current one. Just wait for a better version with the perks you want, and then continue fighting at your own pace.
Optional Eclipse
Okay, so The Eclipse is a big deal in Carcosa – it really changes things up and throws a lot more of those nasty, corrupting projectiles at you. You have to deal with it at the start, or depending on how your story unfolds, but after a while, it’s optional. If I just want to chill and explore the coastline, I can totally ignore the creepy hands reaching out. But honestly, ignoring it means missing out on some seriously powerful Corrupted weapons and Artifacts. Those Artifacts do have downsides, but trust me, they’re worth getting even with the negative effects.
