Sheinelle Jones’ 3 Kids Surprise Her in Emotional Moment on Today Show

On the April 14th episode of Today With Jenna & Sheinelle, Sheinelle was surprised live on air by her three children – 16-year-old Kayin and 13-year-old twins, Clara and Uche Jr. – whose father, Uche Ojeh, is deceased.

Teenagers visited the studio to celebrate the launch of Sheinelle’s book, Through Mom’s Eyes, and the emotional event brought many to tears.

It was such a heartwarming moment when Jenna Bush Hager got to share a special surprise! She explained that they absolutely had to acknowledge the people the author dedicated the book to – Kayin, Clara, and Uche – and invited them to join her and Hoda on air. As a fan, it was just lovely to see that dedication recognized!

Her children walked onto the stage carrying a large bouquet of flowers and each gave their mom a hug before speaking about how much they loved her.

“I’m just so incredibly happy for you, Mom,” Kayin said, getting emotional as she spoke to Sheinelle. “You’ve been working towards this goal since the start of the pandemic, and it’s been a journey with its share of challenges.”

“We’ve obviously gone through so much,” he added, “and I’m so happy for you.”

Uche Jr. praised his mom’s kind and compassionate nature, explaining that it positively impacts everyone she meets.

It was so sweet! Clara gave her mom this beautiful framed quote, designed to look just like the cover of her book – it was a motto she really lives by, and honestly, it made Sheinelle burst into tears all over again. It was such a touching moment.

“Oh my goodness,” the 47-year-old said. “How special is this?”

It was such a special moment seeing Sheinelle’s book finally come out, especially knowing how much work she’d poured into it over the years. It meant even more knowing what she’s been through – her husband, who she married back in 2007, faced a really tough battle with an aggressive brain cancer while she was writing, and she never gave up on either of them.

This prompted Sheinelle to take a break from her work on Today to focus on her family. Sadly, Uche passed away just four months later, in May 2025.

Since then, the TV personality has openly discussed her experience with grief. She recently shared how challenging it is to maintain a normal routine while raising her three young children.

She explained to People magazine that people often assume she’s fully recovered when they see her on television. However, she insists that’s not the case, describing her daily life as a constant struggle – like trying to swim through mud.

She explained that even everyday tasks – like getting ready in the morning, going to work, or managing family life – felt incredibly challenging while she was grieving. She emphasized the importance of actively working through her emotions, acknowledging that she could experience both sadness and happiness at the same time. As she stated months ago, and continues to believe, she is committed to embracing joy despite her grief.

She’s currently sharing life advice from the mothers of famous people like Lady Gaga, Matthew McConaughey, and Steph Curry in her new book.

Sheinelle shared on Instagram that her book is a heartfelt tribute to mothers, and she hopes readers will enjoy it.

Now that Sheinelle is celebrating a new achievement, let’s revisit some of her most heartwarming family moments with Uche.

Sheinelle Jones frequently shared the story of how she met her husband, Uche Ojeh. She was 19 years old and giving him a tour of Northwestern University’s campus when they first connected.

As Savannah Guthrie mentioned in a tribute on Today on May 23rd, the consultant was a wonderful person and a perfect life partner to Sheinelle.

During his fight with brain cancer, the hosts of Today often spoke about how important Uche’s faith and Nigerian background were to him. Sheinelle Jones recalled in a 2021 post that their three children all wore traditional Nigerian clothing for their baptism.

As the father of kids Kayin, and younger twins Clara and Uche Jr., Uche put his family first.

Craig Melvin shared in a tribute on Today that the man loved his children more than anything. He was incredibly proud and always there for them – at every soccer game, concert, and recital. He was a very involved and supportive father.

On today’s show, Al Roker shared that Uche, though quiet, had a wonderfully sharp wit and was a genuinely humble person.

In a 2021 birthday post dedicated to Uche, Sheinelle shared that her late husband had always been her constant support.

She shared on Instagram that whenever she searches for his photo on her iPhone, almost all the results show them together – either with her, or helping their kids with activities like homework, music, or sports. She expressed deep gratitude for sharing her life with such a wonderful person.

Oh my gosh, did you see the segment on Today about Uche and Sheinelle? It was SO sweet! They were talking about how they really had to work at their relationship, even with all those miles between them! But Sheinelle said it was totally, completely worth it. She actually posted something back in 2022 that just killed me – she said Uche first caught her eye when she was only 19! And now, look at them! It’s just the most beautiful love story, seriously.

During their most challenging moment, Savannah highlighted that both Sheinelle and Uche were incredibly strong and resilient.

After the announcement of Uche’s passing, Sheinelle expressed her gratitude for everyone’s kindness and support.
