A remastered version of a classic PlayStation 1 RPG is currently available to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members, but that might change soon. Games are typically added to these services for either 12 or 24 months, and since this game was added in February 2025, it could be removed next month.
So, that SaGa Frontier Remastered game that’s free with PlayStation Plus? It might not be around forever, and honestly, keeping track of which games are leaving is a pain. It’s the remastered version of the classic RPG from ’97, and it’s published by Square Enix. The thing with Square Enix games on PS Plus is, unlike some other publishers, they don’t really have a set time they stay available. Usually, it’s around a year, but you can never be totally sure!
A Very Nostalgic PS1 RPG
If you were playing games on the original PlayStation in 1997 and enjoyed RPGs, you might remember SaGa Frontier. While it wasn’t a blockbuster title or the most popular RPG of its time, it’s become a beloved cult classic, particularly among dedicated RPG players. This is why it’s been re-released and even updated with a remaster over the years. The original game received a score of 71 on Metacritic, and the remaster improved that to 77 – a slight increase that likely reflects how game scoring has become more generous over time.
Originally released only for PlayStation 1, this game is now available on mobile, Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4. While Square Enix hasn’t created a dedicated PlayStation 5 version, you can play the PS4 version on PS5 and PS5 Pro thanks to backward compatibility. However, the game won’t receive any special upgrades for the PS5 Pro. Good news for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members: the game is included with your subscription, so you don’t have to pay the full price of $24.99. It’s worth noting that the sequel, SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered, isn’t included.
The game is a turn-based RPG where you play as one of eight unique heroes, each with their own story and objectives. This remaster features upgraded graphics and new content, including a brand new playable character to unlock.
