Contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord
One of the biggest strengths of The Clone Wars was how it brought back Darth Maul, the villain from The Phantom Menace, in a surprising way. He appeared in Season 4 and became an unpredictable enemy, working to build his own power base. Maul established himself in the galaxy’s criminal underworld, creating a group called the Shadow Collective, which included organizations like Black Sun, the Pykes, and the Hutts. Now, with the new series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord showing Maul trying to regain control of his criminal empire, it makes sense that characters from the Shadow Collective are reappearing – and recently, Maul brutally eliminated one of them.
In the Shadow Lord episode “Chapter 4: Pride and Vengeance,” Maul kills Marg Krim, the head of the Pyke Syndicate. Viewers of Clone Wars may recognize Krim as the primary villain in the Season 7 storyline featuring Ahsoka Tano and the Martez sisters. Specifically, in the episode “Deal or No Deal,” Rafa Martez initially agreed to transport spice for the Pyke Syndicate before deciding to abandon the shipment on its way to Oba Diah. Krim also appears as a holographic projection in “The Phantom Apprentice,” where he’s instructed by Maul to disband the syndicate’s leaders after the Siege of Mandalore.
Why Maul Killed Marg Krim

Maul killed Krim for two main reasons. First, it was an act of revenge. Maul explained that Krim refused to give him sanctuary after the Clone Wars, a deeply personal betrayal. While the details of what happened are currently unclear—perhaps they’ll be explored in future stories like a novel, comic, or even a flashback in Shadow Lord—it’s likely Krim saw Maul’s weakened state after losing Mandalore as a chance to take control of his criminal organization without interference. He probably didn’t expect Maul to regain power and become a major player in the underworld again.
Removing Krim wasn’t just about getting revenge for Maul; it was a crucial part of his larger plan to rebuild his criminal empire. The story of Shadow Lord focuses on Maul’s attempt to unite the various criminal organizations into a powerful Shadow Collective capable of challenging the Empire. To achieve this, he needs loyal leaders in each syndicate. After eliminating Krim, Maul installs Kalt as the new head of the Pykes, but only if Kalt obeys his orders.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve been following the developments around Shadow Lord with a lot of interest, and it’s made me think about something in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Remember when Dryden Vos mentioned Crimson Dawn had a shaky relationship with the Pyke Syndicate? He was reluctant to go along with Han’s plan because of it. Now, knowing that Maul eventually took control of Crimson Dawn, the recent events in Shadow Lord seem to explain why that alliance was so fragile. It looks like Maul killing Krim was the thing that initially brought the Pykes and Crimson Dawn together! Since Kalt reports directly to Maul, it’s clear he wants those two groups working with each other, not competing. It really reinforces what we’re learning about Maul – he was a master manipulator who aimed to control the entire galactic underworld, essentially keeping the Five Crime Syndicates in line. The Pykes and Crimson Dawn are distinct organizations, but under Maul’s leadership, they were both part of his larger operation.
It will be compelling to see how closely the first season of Shadow Lord ties into the events of Solo. The show seems to be setting up how Maul eventually takes control of Crimson Dawn, and with Season 2 already confirmed, there’s plenty more story to explore. Lucasfilm might be holding back some details to reveal as the series continues. However things unfold, watching Maul manipulate events and lead his organization promises to be very interesting.
