After learning the planned new Stargate series was cancelled before production could start, actor Michael Shanks, known for his role in Stargate SG-1, has asked fans to sign a petition urging Amazon MGM Studios to reconsider.
According to Variety, Amazon executives worried the new series wouldn’t attract viewers beyond its current fans, as reported on Wednesday, June 3rd, by a source familiar with the matter.
After this news surfaced, Stargate executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, who was a consultant on the project, responded on X (formerly Twitter): “That’s not accurate. We always aimed to make a show that would appeal to a wide audience.”
One fan urged fellow Stargate enthusiasts to express their disappointment to Amazon and Amazon MGM Studios about the cancellation, stating they wouldn’t watch any future Stargate projects unless the original creators – including Martin Gero, who was set to be the showrunner – were involved.
As a huge Stargate fan, I saw this post from Michael Shanks – you know, Daniel Jackson from the show – on X, and it really struck me. He basically said that if anyone wants to see a new Stargate series with the original people involved, now’s the time to make some noise! He feels like if we don’t speak up, that era of Stargate is gone for good. He’s urging fans to let the studios know we’re still out here and we care.

The Stargate story began with a movie in 1994 and has grown into many different TV shows and films. A new series was recently announced in November.
Mallozzi shared on X that Gero spent over two years developing a new Stargate series, creating a show that would appeal to both new fans and longtime viewers without ignoring established storylines.
I was so excited when I heard about the new Stargate series. It felt like the creators really understood what made the original so special – all the action, adventure, that sense of discovery, and the heart and humor woven throughout, especially the idea of people becoming a family. They announced it was happening back in November 2025, but sadly, it seems that original plan has now been cancelled. It’s really disappointing to hear that the creative vision we were all hoping for is no longer moving forward.

He expressed deep sadness, saying they won’t be able to share that world and those characters with audiences, or revisit beloved characters from previous seasons. He was particularly heartbroken for the dedicated writers who put so much effort into the show.
This is for Martin, who remained optimistic even when things were difficult, and always worked hard to create a show that would please existing fans while also attracting new ones. And it’s for the dedicated Stargate fans who waited patiently for a continuation they would have truly enjoyed.

I’ve been following James Hibbs’ work for a while now – he’s a drama writer over at TopMob, and he really has his finger on the pulse of everything happening in TV, from streaming services like Netflix and Hulu to traditional channels. Before getting into writing, he actually worked in PR, first at a business-to-business agency and then at Fremantle, a big international production company. He’s got a solid background too, with a BA in English and Theatre Studies and a journalism diploma – so he clearly knows his stuff when it comes to storytelling and reporting on the industry.
