As a huge Stargate fan, I was really gutted to hear Amazon and MGM pulled the plug on the revival series – especially after it had already started production! It sounds like showrunner Martin Gero and his team were left completely blindsided, and honestly, so were a lot of us. What makes it even more frustrating is that apparently, the show was cancelled because Gero was trying to make something that would really appeal to longtime fans. It’s ironic, right? Amazon might not have realized just how dedicated the Stargate fandom is, because as soon as the news broke, fans immediately started rallying to try and save it.
Following the news of its cancellation, a fan petition to revive Martin Gero’s new Stargate show quickly gained traction on Change.org. As of today, it has over 12,500 signatures and continues to grow, demonstrating a strong and dedicated fanbase who are disappointed by the decision.
Fans weren’t the only ones voicing their opinions. Joseph Mallozzi, a producer on the Stargate TV shows, publicly shared that creator Martin Gero spent over two years developing a new Stargate series. This new show was designed to be accessible to new fans while still honoring the established storylines and characters. Mallozzi expressed disappointment that they won’t be able to share this new world and its characters—including both new faces and some returning favorites—with audiences.
Stargate SG-1 Star Reacts to Fan Petition to Save Revival

Michael Shanks, known for his role in Stargate SG-1, is encouraging fans to take action. He shared a post about a petition and added his own message: If you’d like to see another Stargate show featuring the original creators or actors, now is the time to make your voice heard. Otherwise, that possibility might be lost forever. Let the decision-makers know you’re interested.
The petition from Stargate fans claims the show’s cancellation disrespects its loyal audience of over 30 years and is a poor business decision. They believe a dedicated fanbase is an asset, not a problem, for any network. Fans also worry that by excluding the original creators of SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe, Amazon risks making a bland, unappealing version of Stargate that viewers won’t enjoy.
It appears the new Stargate show was cancelled not because of its quality, but due to internal issues at the studio. Amazon recently brought on Brett Fetter, a former executive from Netflix (Stranger Things, 3 Body Problem, The Haunting of Hill House), to lead their worldbuilding and genre series. However, two Amazon TV executives, Nick Pepper and Matt King, who strongly supported the Stargate revival, have since left the company. The new leadership team reportedly felt the show’s direction, as envisioned by the creator, no longer fit with Amazon’s plans for future programming.
As a huge fan, I’ve been seeing a lot of discussion about this, and it’s true – Stargate has been around for a long time! It all started with Roland Emmerich’s movie back in ’94, and it’s grown from there. What’s kept it going isn’t just new people discovering it with each show or movie, but the loyalty of the fans who’ve been with it for years. So, it feels really unfair to cancel this new series just because it was made with us, the existing fans, in mind. It feels like punishing the people who’ve supported Stargate all along!
