Of all the games currently in development at XBOX Game Studios, State of Decay 3 from Undead Labs has been the most secretive. It was originally announced in 2020, but very little has been shared about it since. However, according to Jez Corden of Windows Central, we’ll likely get a look at State of Decay 3 at the Xbox Showcase on June 7th.
According to a new report from Corden, development of State of Decay 3 is moving along well, and the game is currently being tested by a select group of players from the game’s community. The report also suggests that this new installment will be more refined and polished than State of Decay 2.
According to Corden, we’re very likely to see State of Decay 3 at the upcoming showcase. It’s currently being tested privately with a small group of players and some YouTubers. Early reports suggest that Undead Labs has successfully created a high-quality, ‘AAA’ experience with the new game, something that was missing from State of Decay 2.
Philip Holt, the head of the studio developing State of Decay 3, explained that the game was in very early stages when the first trailer was shown back in April. At that point, it was essentially just an idea outlined in a Word document, which explains the slow development process.
He explained in an interview that the trailer was created very early in the development process – before the game itself, or even a dedicated team, existed. At that point, the game was essentially just an idea outlined in a Word document, representing the absolute initial stages of development.
The trailer was fully pre-rendered by the studio Blur and designed to showcase Undead Labs’ creative vision for the upcoming game, State of Decay 3.
According to Corden, we shouldn’t expect many announcements soon from most XBOX Game Studios teams like Rare, Obsidian, Compulsion, or Double Fine. He did mention that Ninja Theory and Double Fine are working on bigger, more complex projects than their latest games – Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 and Kiln. However, both projects are still in the early stages of development, so it’s unlikely we’ll see them revealed anytime soon.
Blizzard also likely won’t be at the June 7th showcase, as they usually announce big games at their own annual event, BlizzCon. One of the games they’re expected to reveal is a shooter set in the StarCraft universe. Rumors suggest it will have a visual style similar to the cinematic cutscenes in StarCraft 2, rather than the more cartoonish look of Overwatch.
Besides these announcements, Corden thinks we might see what Toys for Bob has been developing, potentially a new Spyro game. InXile Entertainment is also likely to share more details about their upcoming game, Clockwork Revolution.
Although we probably won’t see the new Xbox hardware, Project Helix, at the Xbox Showcase on June 7th, reports suggest Microsoft is nearing the release of an updated version of the Xbox Elite Controller – possibly the third generation.
