After previously mentioning that Subnautica 2 will feature expanded content like more biomes, creatures, and large sea creatures, design lead Anthony Gallegos now says the game will be the studio’s most refined and ambitious early access launch yet.
It’s a big promise, but Unknown Worlds has a history of delivering, and they’ve taken the time to make sure the new game lives up to what fans are hoping for. According to a recent PC Gamer interview, the developers are also really focused on what the community thinks.
Moving forward, we aim to balance highly refined content we’re certain about with newer ideas where we’d love to get your feedback and collaborate on improvements.
Gallegos was drawn to the studio’s unique approach, which distinguished it from other games in early access and set a new standard. The studio intentionally shared unfinished work with the community, encouraging feedback and allowing players to directly influence the final game. This commitment to open development and community involvement is something they continue to prioritize.
I’ve been following the development of Subnautica 2 closely, and it’s so cool to see the devs engaging with fans on a Nolt board! People are throwing out all sorts of ideas for the sequel – everything from really intense weather and waves to even wanting to find a copy of Ryley Robinson’s book from the first game! Honestly, how any of that would fit into the story is a mystery, but it’s fun to speculate!
It’s still unclear exactly how much of the new content will be playable when early access begins today at 8 AM PST for PC and Xbox Series X/S. The developers at Unknown Worlds have previewed several diverse areas on the planet Zezura, as well as new, massive creatures called Leviathans – including one unsettlingly similar to Cthulhu, named the Collector. We’ve also gotten a look at the Tadpole, a customizable submersible, and learned about a strange Tree that players are warned to avoid.
The game’s launch into early access is facing a lot of pressure, even before considering the legal dispute between the studio’s creators and Krafton. Having garnered five million wishlists and currently leading Steam’s global sales charts, the success or failure of the game will be crucial for Unknown Worlds, and they are well aware of the stakes.
